Doesn't look like it ate too much. We miss having frogs around the property. It is drier here than closer to the Gulf where there are plenty.

Actually In my Hydroponic garden's nutrient tank every summer I have tadpoles and I clean my filter every day but I also get to watch a few hundred baby frogs jumping around :) I dont know what my neighbors think about it because when it rains it can get kinda noisy here :08:
Lets see if I can find a video :ha:

You might want to try Palmolive dish soap the original green one . Mix with water and use a Windex spray bottle to apply it . That will get rid of lots of little critters for me .. That centipede looks weird! Just be glad you don’t have to buy it shoes

These are all on the back porch getting some water I have a plant sitting in. Even the birds are panting, poor little guys! I have Cardinals, Mockingbirds (which are trying to keep all the other birds away from the water), I think Wrens, Finches, Sparrows, Jays, and a little green bird I haven't identified yet. The cats sit at this back door just mesmerized! So cute!
Sorry for the picture quality, I am shooting through a glass door.

Noah, I have a bird bath in the front and in the back yard and a huge water trough that always has water in it. But the large birds, Grackles and Crows, keep the tiny ones away from them. I always feed and water any critters that come around here! :) I think the water in the plant saucer is a lot cooler also so the smaller ones prefer to drink there. They are so precious!

Here's something none of us like to see. After being gone for a week I came home to this. Wiped out one of the AeroGardens entirely and I am having to really battle with them on the ones close by, naturally!

Yes they are. It always takes my breath away when I see them flying by. Their wing span is 4 plus feet wide. They spend a lot of time on the ground though, unlike other falcons or birds, and they build their nest out of sticks. Fire ants often eat their babies so their successful reproduction rate is low. I think I read that they are on the US Endangered species list and are protected birds. ~J

There is a pair of birds that watches me quite closely when I work in the garden. Sometimes I have to watch were I put my feet because when I use a rake or a hoe they are often between my feet looking for critters to snack on. I've even see the female (pictured here) eat a centipede!
When in a good mood, the male has quite a complex song. Otherwise, they both just use a clicking-like sound. They never seem afraid.
Female White-rumped Shama.

I know katydids are a pest species, but I have an affection for them since I kept them as pets when I was a little kid. I watched this one grow up through her nymph stages into an adult over the summer last year. Really fascinating! I had plenty of plants around, so she never really damaged any one plant. Here she is on my favorite rose, Oranges n Lemons.

Don't know what these are, but there are about 7 eating my Kalamansi (Filipino Lime). The smaller ones look like bird crap, but as they get larger, they take on this green color. I guess the pattern is to mimic a snake?

Mystery solved - it is a Chinese Yellow Swallowtail caterpillar. Smaller ones look like bird crap, larger form looks like snake head, and the chrysalis (which I'm trying to find) starts green, slowly turns dusty brown from which emerges a black and white swallowtail. I didn't see yellow in the photos so I down't know why the name has yellow in it.

YUCK..... I dont like them things.. we have a lot of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail's here and they munch on my citrus trees . Plus they lay eggs in 15 different location on the trees :( under the leaves and hardly ever on a leaf where they been feeding .. Pretty to look at as adults but disgusting leaf eating critters as pupa or worms ...

Assassin bug (wheel bug) on my Cherry of the Rio Grande.
Nice predator bug for the garden. Some what resembles a Leaf footed stink bug (which is a unwanted pest), but Assassin's head is different shape and has the spiny crest on it's back.
Can inflict a painful bite (worse than a bee sting) if you pester them to much.

Found This guy living rent free.I had no idea they liked pineapples! I found 1 on my butternut squash and was "attacked" by one a couple of weeks ago when I was making sure my mystery plants had water--1/2" creature who sat happily on my hand so I could take a picture but was out of shots and it's just a blur so I won't post it. Sorry.
Jack (in my avatar) is about 2" long and used to only visit when a new leaf opened; 2 other tiny babies showed up sometimes when he wasn't around. Today all 3 were nestled down in the banana. Can someone tell me if they're hanging out for flies? I see lots of flies on the days they show up. Other days? Not so much.

This guy showed for a couple days but did not stick around. It would have been cool if he stuck around, but I guess it is good he did not find enough pests on my plant to make it worthwhile. If you watch close in the animation, he did have one meal wondering around to dispatch before he ate and ran.

I would kill to have a few "wasp nests" of them here in FL. When I first started gardening I noticed "crystal orbs" on my jasmine in the fall; they looked bad so I pruned them off and tossed them. Stupid. Found out what they were and never sprayed for another pest again. Of course, I never saw a lady bug again but holy cow I loved my PMs.
I found this snake prowling through my back yard today, it's about 2 feet long.

So I brought some plants in Wednesday; it got down to 36 here Thursday morning. Everything was potted in "sterile" soil because I was trying to avoid bringing bugs. (My soil here is dismal.) I hadn't seen any tree frogs on the banana or other plants since my post on 11/12 so figured they were hibernating. (Do they do that?) Forgive the mess on my counter...it was worse before I edited...never said I was a housekeeper...

He/she has been caught (those babies can JUMP FAST!) and released outside; I haven't a clue what to feed it and was afraid I'd accidentally step on it. Supposed to be 80 by Sunday and nothing less than 47 until then so the hitchhiker should be fine.
Word to the wise: inspect inside bound plants carefully.
Apparently Jack is back. Or should that be Jack is black? (Okay, not black but very dark.)

No, he left but I am very tempted to actually buy some eggs coming spring just to have around. The one in my photo's must have come from a neighbor as they do not survive the winter here.

The one in my photo's must have come from a neighbor as they do not survive the winter here.I'm not sure they survive winter anywhere. Come fall they mate, the female, if she's hungry, bites the head off the male (obviously he's a goner) then builds her nest. In spring they hatch! They're really cute at about 1" long (when I saw them). I was in MD--supposedly zone 6b/7a--are you colder?

I finally found the culprit who's been eating the tomato blooms. I'd looked as had Mr. Cocoa but only in the evening. Rain last night and being out early this morning led to capturing a 4" horn worm. Yes, captured. I'm saving it until the little girl next door comes home from school; she loves creepy things. But also so she can see a garden pest up close. She's expressed an interest in gardening so I've set up 3 tomatoes, 3 zukes and a compost watermelon plant for her. (Having been forced to weed my mother's garden as a child, I know that you can't force a love for plants; I was in my 20s before I ever wanted to dig in the dirt again.) She's been watching it grow (watering when reminded) and mine besides asking a bazillion questions so we have a Saturday date to add a few more things to her bed. I have spare mulch/compost from the County, some marigolds, a few more tomatoes and spare seeds in my stash.

Found this fella in a bird house on the deck waiting for a snack....
In fact there were two others actively hunting nearby.
The Black Rat snake is the largest in the region about 4.5 feet in length
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/110357684@N02/14408435922" title="Untitled by Hostafarian, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2909/14408435922_3951b43a08_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="Untitled"></a>
No pictures but I unexpectedly encountered a harmless FL black snake when I went to put away the cast net in order to set out the recycling bin. We'd seen a 3 footer slithering across the yard just minutes before so my girly girl "EEEEEK, there's a snake" was met with scoffing disbelief by the little girl next door and Mr. Cocoa. There I was calmly pulling the net up to place on its hook out of the way (where it should have been days ago) and the black "leash" was spitting at me. Turned out to be a 2 footer that had entangled itself.
Much as I hate snakes, I did help, albeit gingerly, to free it for the next 20 minutes but, in the end it, everything came down to destroying an $80 net or the snake which was impossibly snared. So I got my trusty clippers and Mr. Cocoa cut off its head to stop its suffering. (Shoot me but I once spent 2 hours with my father trying to free a black snake from deer netting that was cheap and we did cut it but it died anyway--too much time--too much trauma.)
Not much of a story, is it?

just an fyi: cuban tree frogs are invasive and eat native fl frogs. i try to catch them and throw them in the freezer to kill them humanely (please don't let the wife know).
Only in Central FL have I encountered those Cuban guys; My friend, who has lived here for over 30 yeas, says you absolutely don't want to touch them. (I'm not sure why but they're not very pretty IMO) I am not a frog person but have come to like the green ones which I haven't seen here; I miss them. Do Cubans eat those sweet gentle guys/gals? If so, I won't be humane at all...

They may be in mating mode or are sharing the location of your best eats. A few weeks ago I was digging in my front yard to repair a sprinkler head and found about 10 turtle eggs very freshly laid. They were about 10 inches deep and there was no clue above ground that they were there. I am about 500 ft away from a man made lake. The local herpetological people told me these are an invasive species and I should dispose of them.

Must be a reason you chased it off. Is it a moth as it looks? and is it a type harful to your plants?

Peucetia viridans (Green Lynx Spider) (http://www.spiders.us/species/peucetia-viridans/) maybe?
◕Redish coloration indicate this is female.
◕Eye arrangement is fairly recognizable and hard to mistake.
◕They are covered in conspicuous black spines, and the femurs have many small black dots. In both genders, the legs are usually a translucent green color, with yellowish-orange rings at some of the joints.
◕This species has the ability to change colors based on habitat, so the legs may be translucent reddish-pink in some specimens.
◕This spider does not spin a web for prey capture. Instead, it sits and waits for prey to come nearby and then pounces on it with lightning speed and agility. It may also actively stalk its prey, running and jumping from branch to branch with ease, which is how it earned the nickname “lynx spider.” Though they do not use silk for webs, they do use it for drag lines and for creating their silken egg sacs.

We used a broom/rake to get him in a deep sterlite box. Did not want to take any chances. Usually there is a rattlesnake in our yard every year, but even though the dogs have been trained in a rattlesnake avoidance class ( I highly recommend that if you have rattlesnakes around), they get relocated to an unpopulated area. People are too quick with killing snakes, but snakes do take care of the rodent population.
Over the years we have seen many different snakes here, usually king snakes, gopher snakes and garter snakes, usually we keep them around or relocate them before the neighbor puts them on his BBQ...

Turtles and ice...
I really need to find my phone to computer cord. Last night I didn't bother recording a Cuban frog hanging on my needs to be replaced and not air tight sliding glass door. I saw him when I flipped on the kitchen light; I swear he was silently yelling "Elaine, Elaine" which is not my name but because I'm old the Graduate came to mind immediately. I think I imagined the glass rattling--perhaps not--he was pretty beefy and didn't flinch when I rapped on the glass.
I have very shamefully mistreated pups that came to me in a roundabout way from our Worm Farmer 2 years ago; 2 are now in the ground and the last survivor (a plantain) will be soon. (I lost 1 or 2 for several reasons beyond my control; shame on me...)
But I digress...
Today I notice a frog nestled in the new leaf of the Namwah that has perked up; sadly it's a Cuban which means, I believe, that I'm really glad I didn't bring Jack along from Jacksonville despite his great efforts to accompany me. Shame. I like the green guys very much...the gray guys are boring...

I am not the biggest fan of ground squirrels. Fighting with them over my vegetable garden and they usually win.
This baby one was very cute though, but a crow got it right in front of my eyes.
I guess I hate the crows even more.... :(

Even if I could find my cord it wouldn't help; according to the friend who was watching while I ran to get my phone a mockingbird chased him/her off. (If you've never been attacked by a MB or catbird, you have no idea just how viscous those fairly small birds are.)
What him/her you may ask? A barred owl! Sitting on the power lines in my backyard! 20 feet from me in the waning daylight. We locked eyes! I was captivated; I'm not sure he/she was also but nobody flinched for at least 5 minutes. I was raised in the country and have lived on/visited several farms in my long life and have heard owls but never ever seen one before. Maybe I did but not that close. Majestically huge and beautiful!
I truly live on the edge of an Enchanted Forest.

If you are referring to the big-butt fly in the above post, I never said it was a girl. I referred to the creature as "it"
Yes I know but generally that term refers to females, doesn't it? (I had to look it up.)

Thank you. We get at least one or two snakes in our yard every year (we know of) because we have a canyon behind the house. I actually do not mind having them around unless it is a rattlesnake. They all take care of rodents, but we usually relocate them to an unpopulated wetland area.
We mostly get rattlesnakes, Gopher snakes, Garter Snakes and King Snakes.

Locally we have a heavy population of deer.
About ten go foraging through the yard a day.
These fellas will decimate your landscape in no time.
If it tastes good it is gone.
Note the tree in the center of the photo, the English ivy is stripped to a height of 6 feet.
Also note the temperature/date at the bottom of the photo....not prime for growing banana plants:)
