Just a quick hello. I'm currently on the smck dab line of zones 7 and 8. I'm frma much warmer climate, the big South Fla, and looking for some tropical types that will remind me of home.
I'm soing to try the Carolina Queen avilable from TyTy nurserry (I think). I'm also look at an online store selling seeds, but the I would be gowng the seeded kind. The seeds are sure less expensive than the started plants.
I am also looking tofeed the small amount of livestock I keep on my land.
here wee a couple people that tried to IM me when I started my membership on here today, but my wbbrowser wasnot set up fot that yet. Sorry if you got refused, I'm sure you understand.
Now if Icoulnd a varietyof mango that would grw locally Iwould be in heaven.:simpatica

If you have a greenhouse, you can probably grow mangoes in that - I don't know that there are any hardy to Z 7/8.... Or, of course, you can build a greenhouse, which is fairly easy in and of itself. It'll also give you a place to bring in your young nanners and other tropicals in the spring/fall.

Rick, there are lots of cold-hardy bananas and other subtropical plants that will do fine in your zone. Check out the cold-hardy bananas forum on this site.
Beware of TyTy! Just do a Google search on them, and you will find a whole lot of negative information about them on various forums and websites. Carolina Queen isn't a real cultivar. It's just a name that they made up for a cultivar that already exists. Not sure which one, as I have no idea what it looks like.
Welcome!

Welcome Rick. Take the warnings about Ty Ty and run from them! There are too many good nurseries out there to waste your time with those crooks (based on what I've read from others so many times, I've avoided them myself).
Your only chance of growing a mango is in a greenhouse (during winter, at least). I'm in zone 9 and some people have had some success in special locations between two buildings, next to a greenhouse vent, etc.). There are several lower growing (dwarf) varieties that can work out. Julie is one I might try if another one I'm buying next month doesn't survive outdoors.
Good luck!
