Hi, I'm new here. I found this site by searching for banana seeds on google. I live in Minnesota and I know it's not the best place to grow banana trees. I want to try a few varieties from seed because I will have to start them indoors. Does anyone know where I can get the "Ice Cream" variety of banana seeds online or here in Minnesota? Also, what type of soil mixes are you using for best results? Is there a thread on it? Thanks for the help!:banana_az

Welcome! One of the first things us newbies learn is that seedless bananas don't have seeds! Bananas grow from something called a corm - something like a tuber x bulb. Anyway, seedless bananas are mostly propagated by corms - like you would obtain bulbs for an onion.

There is lots of great information here, including people growing bananas in Minnesota and much farther north: Montreal, Edmonton, Norway, etc. Check out the thread on cold hardy bananas; peruse the member map and click on the "pins" to view that member's profile and the bananas they are growing - if they have listed any.

Cheers!

Thanks for the help richard. I didn't know it was seedless. Is a corm the same as a rhizome, because I saw some rhizomes on sale at banana-tree.com. I will try looking for some cold-resistant varieties as well.

Thanks for the pic Ron! I will check out the wiki page also. BTW, I had a one foot dwarf cavendish many years ago and I have caught the bug to try it again. I have a 400W HPS metal halide that I will be growing the tree under in the winter.

I know, it should be a challenge. I have actually grown dwarf citrus and even olive trees up here. They did pretty well until they got taken over my a pest in the summer when I had them outdoors. What have you been doing with your trees in the winter? What varieties are you growing?

How have the dwarf brazilian and dwarf orinoco done for you guys? Is the fruit pretty good? They may be some good starter varieties for me. Is anyone growing the CA Gold?
