Congratulations inkcube on the upcoming publication of your books on Passiflora (passionflowers), thanks for letting me proofread it, as well as the future book on Stanhopea orchids and the one on everyone's favorite topic bananas.

Well done Pito! Hope you don't mind me sharing the news, I knew you wouldn't say anything.

thanks everyone! the Passiflora book is in the final stages; spelling, fact checking and photo credits - it will be out in Europe (more Passiflora enthusiasts) sometime next fall and then the US in early 2009. it will be aimed at the average hobbyist; history, some botany, culture, and a section on species & hybrids with how to grow.

the book on the orchids of the genus Stanhopea will be similar as the Passiflora book. i wrote both of these because i have hundreds of both types of plants and there seems to be little on their culture and botany.

the banana book is about 300 pages long so far and i am at odds with the publisher over some minor issues about content, i originally started it for the average hobbyist who wants to try and grow Musa - i have published scientific articles and chapters about Musa and thought it was time for a non-scientific book. in my opinion there isn't much printed for the hobbyist grower and many hobbyist have no access to libraries that have the scientific publications or the libraries don't subscribe ot the journals that carry such articles. it is supposed to be the 3rd of the 3 books released, sometime in 2010. it will be published in Spanish before it is released in English.

my main reason for all 3 is i am tired of horticulturists who don't want to or refuse to write for the hobbyist, there are plenty who think if its not scientific its not worth the paper its printed on and they often criticize or look down upon those who do write a hobbyist article or book. with the exception of bananas there are more hobby growers growing orchids, passionflowers, landscape plants, houseplants, roses, etc.

sorry for the preaching.

Wow only 71 views by 29 members with only 5 commenting, not counting me and Pito. I truly thought more people would be interested in hearing about another member's publications on bananas, passionflowers, and orchids, epecially coming from a dedicated Musa scientist like Pito.

That's ok! I have the same problem teaching "Liberal Arts Mathematics", which is by definition a terminal course (not a prerequisite for anything) for students whose major does not require any math beyond college algebra. Heaven forbid that we should study math history, write papers on contributions of women in math, short bio's of famous figures, and cover all the major categories "Public Television" style. But college administrators say no, no, no: these students need to work the basic problems (the 1st week of problems) from every college math course in order to "appreciate" the subject ... and by the way we have no class assignments for you in the coming semesters. Oh well, time to make lemonade!

Congratulations Inkcube on the books! It would be great to have a book for the banana hobbiest, there aren't very many, if any as far as I've seen. The Passiflora sounds wonderful as well.

Pito,
Congrats on the book!

I wish we could have met at the World Orchid Confrence! It was a wonderful show!

I'm doing my part to raise Stanhopeas (Ocularis cross, I think) and Passion Flowers (unknown name)!

Fantastic, Pito! Can't wait for the banana book! I grow a few passion flowers, but try to stick to the hardy ones (zone 7 hardy!). I've got the two natives here, Passoflora incarnata and P. lutea. We also grow P. edulis Sims at the greenhouse and P. ligularis as well.

Congrats again, and a big thanks from a fellow hobbyist!

Missed this thread 1st time around I guess. This is great news. Can't wait to be able to buy the passiflora book, and really excited about a banana book aimed at us, the hobbyist. Please keep us posted on their progress to the bookstores.

Hello All & Pito,

I'm new here, just joined, first post... so this is part intro and part 'I want copies of these new books, too!'

Am excited to see a new banana title about to be available. Have Lessard's and it is certainly OK IMO for what it is. Decent photos in it, though.

In Tampa I'm growing currently Mysore, Hua Moa, super-dwarf Cavendish 'Novak', velutina, and I think Golden Aromatic.

I'm a long-time orchid hobbyist with a big interest in Stanhopeas, so that title of Pito's is of great interest to me, as is his upcoming book on Passifloras, another interest of mine.

I retired from USF in Tampa and now have residency in Alajuela, Costa Rica. Presently I am bouncing back and forth between CR and Tampa. I have a nice apartment in Alajuela but, dang it, it has no place to grow any plants at all, being quite shady with all indirect light. Here I am, in the tropics at last, and nowhere with enough light right now to grow even a philodendron. Alas!

So maybe Pito will take pity and put me on the list for his new books so I can at least look at pictures of what I have no place to grow right now.

Cheers All!
