Wow, there are so many absolutely beautiful yards in this thread. I totally enjoy opening it every time someone adds their pics, so I'll throw my hat (yard) in the ring for viewing, now that I've finally gotten my camera! Pix with cell phones are no fun.

My wife and I are avid divers and our favorite place on earth is Cozumel, Mexico. We wanted to re-create, as much as we could, the feel of Cozumel whenever we went out back. From the outside bars, to the palms, to the pool, to the hammock, we wanted this feeling more often:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RaS9Q4YAuKA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RaS9Q4YAuKA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I made this film about our "drinking day" on Cozumel. We dive every day, so drinking is at a minimum, except for the last Friday. Our flight out is always early, and we follow the "don't fly within 24 hours of diving" rule. Friday always leads to hung-over flying on Saturday.

We've still got some work to do, but we are at the point where our backyard is a mini-vacation destination!

Here's a panorama of my entire backyard:

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=11827&size=1

It's my first attempt at making a panorama, and it's not perfect, but it gives you the idea. Here's the three pictures that make up the pano:

Left side, deck and bar
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=11824&size=1

Center section with deck, palms, crepe myrtle
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=11825&size=1

Right side with pool and hammock
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=11826&size=1

The pool is still in "party mode" with the volleyball net strung across. It's not permanent, but I planned the pool for volleyball, it's deep in the middle and both ends are shallow. The net is wound up against the fence most of the time.

The structure in the back was built as my "Hammock Hideaway". It get very little sun, so it stays cooler (but never gets used June-September because of the heat). It's my retreat to go take a nap or read a book. Here's a closer pic:

I have a very narrow section of land on the south side of my house, so, being a good ex-Ohioan, I put in a horseshoe pit:

Horseshoe pit
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=11831&size=1

If I had known about bananas a five years ago, this area would probably be lined with banana plants. That would upset my friends though, as this is one of the more popular activities during parties.

Speaking of parties, I can't help but tell the story of how we named the bar. We had a golden retriever named Jose Cuervo Golden Retriever,
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=11839
Jose for short (we also have a cat named Tequila...see a pattern here?). We had to put him down at 13 on Sept. 7, 2007. Aside from our sadness, all of our friends were affected also since we have many parties, and Jose was an active participant. He would sit on the steps at the end of the pool and if the ball came to him, he would hit it with his snout (think Air Bud hitting the basketball). Everyone on that side of the pool knew the rule: The dog is in play!

Well, we just knew it wouldn't be a good party without the old man, so I surprised my wife and had this sign made:

Jose's Cantina
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=11837&size=1

So now he watches over every party we have!

And finally, the front of the house. Much to the neighbors chagrin, this was the last part of our yard to receive attention. They like the final result though, as do we.

It's just a little spit of land compared to many of your yards, but it's pretty large for beach lots here. We couldn't be happier with out little piece of paradise.

Excuse me now, after looking at these pictures, I have to go edge my driveway.

Wonderful job Gary. It really looks great! Neat idea with the pool being shallow on either end. The story of Jose's cantina was touching...losing a dog sucks. It's nice to have a vacation in your backyard!

You not only have an awesome yard it's huge compared to mine! I wish we had more room to grow but honestly I think if we had more space it would just fill up with more dog agility equipment! :doggyandnaner:

My back yard has come a long way since last spring, but I still have a lot to do! I still plan on making plenty more rock pattern walkways. I hope my basjoos get larger. At the end of this season I plan to do a better job of wrapping them up. Last season there was definitely room for improvement, I had lost too much of the psuedo stem height this spring!

Fishman...wow, that looks just great. How did you do the stone walkways? Something I think I'd like to add from the deck to the horseshoe pit!

THANKYOU, Salty dad and nucci60! my wife says they're King Humbert cannas, I remember the tags saying as such, but I found others that look very similar to them as well. My wife walks around calling them tropicana cannas but I think that's what some people just call all cannas...RIGHT? I actually have one of another type that standing alone between two bananas. My wife says that's also a king humbert, just a different color variety- which would lead me to believe FLOWER color. BUT the leaves are just green while all the others are wonderfully striped in yellow. I don't know.

I found it at Home Depot. It's made by a concrete company ....Quickrete I think. I bought it YEARS ago knowing someday....

Fishman- Here is a pic of Yellow King Humbert that has naturalized from 6 bulbs to over 50 in 4 years. The leaves are green with a faint lining if you look close. The flower is actually yellow and orange. I understand the Red King Humbert has bicolored leaves.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1031/878815621_e715479c44.jpg?v=0

I also have a Phaison, also called Tropicanna. It has gorgeously striped leaves and an electric orange flower.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3233/2711097077_8fd7a6bfc2.jpg?v=0

Yours actually look more like Tropicana to me. The Humberts have a distinct yellow border around the orange.

HEY, thanks for your help, I think your right! I always thought my wife was nuts calling them tropicana cannas! (It sounds goofy) I think that the row I have on the left and in my retaining wall area is in fact that. And the ONE we were able to grow from a bulb on the right is the King humbert because I know some type of canna we bought was called the humbert, plus that has the green leaves, no stripes. I think the flowers look like that but i'm taking a second look to be sure. Thanks again.

'Phaison' and 'Tropicana' are the same plant. The yellow and green striped canna in your pictures looks like 'Bengal Tiger' canna, also sometimes called Canna praecox. I believe that I have seen it referred to as 'Tropicanna Gold' before as well. Very nice pictures!

While looking yesterday I stumbled upon pictures of Bengal Tiger cannas and thought they looked just like mine as well. Now I'm going to ask my wife if maybe the tags on the plants (if that was correct) said Tropicana Gold, which was the plant first mentioned by Nucci60.
I started reading up on canna care right after my wife brought them home.
Overall I guess It doesn't matter what type I've actually got as long as I take care of them. BUT it is nice to know when people ask me. However I guess it wouldn't be hard for someone to find some that look at least pretty darn close. If not exactly them, Bengals sure are close!

Cannas seem to have too many names for one plant. If I'm not mistaken Canna bengal tiger and canna pretoria are one and the same also, and I'm pretty sure that is the type you have, but I think(maybe a new look alike?) they just recently came up with the new name for the same plant- "Tropicanna Gold".

Here is some of my yard. Back porch actually. I have to start over on my yard. Well here were go. You can kind of see that the yard through the iron. You might be able to see the yard is really nothing but grass, a few trees, and a thicket.

Same garden archway in early August.

I used to put lots of things around the front porch in pots but I got tired of the plant thieves. Dang thievin' little old ladies. I give away more than I keep because I don't have enough room for everything to stay. I either give away starts or often just keep a start and give away the mother plant. All they would have to do is ask. Now if I don't plant it directly in the ground I don't bother at all unless it's something I don't mind risking.

Thank you Mskitty and magicgreen.

Yep, did the archway myself. I made a topiary frame out of 1/4 inch steel wire to guide me when trimming and help support the weight of snow. Then let the hedge grow up into it.

The blooms in the pic look like some sort of Hedychium, but the foliage underneath is definitely not hedychium. Is the plant that is blooming leaning over the other plant? If not, I am not sure what it is, but looks intriguing...

I agree with Randy; the bloom looks like hedychium, but the foliage is something else. What does that leave us? The canna is (again) Tropicanna/Phaison.

Each zone has its possibilities. For example, Dogwood is one of a multitude of plants that you can successfully grow, but at my place will just hate it. The North American Fruit Explorers (http://www.nafex.org/) will introduce you to more fruits than will fit in your yard!

Just finished adding 12 yds of horse manure and bedding for mulch, and the yard looked so good I thought I'd update this thread. I'm pretty much done changing the beds around now,so the layout should stay the same for a while,(till I decide to grow something else ). I have removed the plants that I didn't like, and am trying a few new varieties. From right to left: FHIA 18, Pisang Awak, SH 3640, Belle, Golden Pillow, Nino, Siam Ruby,(background:Ae Ae), Senorita, Ney Poovan, D. Namwah,(background:D.Namwah variegated), Datil La Lima, (in back corner: Manzano).

OK, I only saw 1 or 2 from northern regions
I've spent the past 4 years on major renovations to our house
I have done almost ALL of the work
Bought Nov '03, started renovation in May '04 so BEFORE:

http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/DSC00372.JPG

Broke a rib in '06, twisted knee in '08
Last major construction started October '08 - story addition
If you are really bored (or interested) here is a web page with the major projects

Holidaves Blowmold blow mold Sales (http://holidaves.com/Construction.htm)

They include:
6'x10' three season front porch - this due to the fact the storm door was ripped out fo our hands 3x the 1st winter

Dormer back of house for a Master bedroom, steam shower, walk in closet

http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/Dormer%20Rough8.JPG

Greenhouse - 1st started in '05, finally new design & finished in '08
Only 7x10 as it is close to the lot line - all that they would allow me since there was a pre-existing cement foundation there

http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/GH09.JPG

July '06 the garage foundation is poured - I hired this out
I then broke a rib walking around the cement wall
So that was it for the summer, My son was born 2 days before I broke the rib

http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/DSCF3393.JPG

For '07 my wife invites 100 people to my son's 1st birthday party
So I "quickly" build a sunroom, nice day & everyone is outside at the pool. Six skylighs - the top 3 vent

http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/DSCF4292.JPG

http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/Skylights-in2.jpg

In Spring '08 I twist my knee - bad
So the garage/great room addition is not started until October
I race to get the roof on by Winter

http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/Day%2024.JPG

I Lose that Race

http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/Day%2028%20approx.JPG

So the front roof is on, I'm working oin finishing up the last few rafters
Then the back roof will go on
Despite all this work I have put in a LOT of gardens - bulbs & perennials - NEXT POST
http://holidaves.com/Pictures/Construction/DSCF5682.JPG

When we bought the house there was one garden - our front - faces North. I have put gardens everywhere & filled them with perennials. I have planted over 6,000 bulbs for Spring flowers
They start in late Feb with close to 2,000 crocus
Then tulips, daffodils, hyancinths & others

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/DSC00059.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/DSC00235.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/DSC00229.jpg

No sooner do the Spring flowers fade then the perennial flowers start blooming. This year I have dozens (hundred??) of Lupines growing. All together the number of perennials are well over 1,000

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/DSC00078.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/DSCF3586.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/LupinePink.jpg

Plus other assorted flowers
I have dozens of these growing all over, different colors

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/Hibiscus.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/DSC00136.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/DSC00110.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/DSC00104.jpg

The back yard faces South, I have the 7x10 greenhouse
Then a 10x14 veggie garden/nursery/grow out garden
Down back near a stream I have a 25x30 garden
Also a pond system going in
With all the construction work I haven't been able to get the gardens the way I want them - maybe next year

A boat load of poop for compost

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/Boat-Poopweb.jpg

This is what my veggie garden looks like onceit grows in
My tomatoes grow abou 8' tall
I planted sunflowers that topped off at around 10'+
A pumpkin went close to 40 pounds
Peppers, summer squash, lots of cukes + more

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/Garden08.jpg

My son ended up with a play area where the pond system was going to go. I picked it up for $75. Loads of wood - I heat a lot with wood

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/PlayareJune08.jpg

The pond system will be around 1,000 gallons & will border the gardens

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/Ponds3.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/Turtle.jpg

I built a picanic table, then I had to build a deck to put it on
It's out back of the pool & will border the ponds

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Home%20Stuff/DSCF4352.jpg

And a new seating area, raised planter, bar, fire pit
I need more "wide area" pics instead of close ups of work

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Home%20Stuff/DSCF4340.jpg

I also have huge Halloween & Christmas displays
Construction put a dent in the displays last year

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Halloween/DSCF4599.jpg

Ante, in the more recently developed areas the power is run underground. Not sure if that for looks, safety, or if it's easier to maintain.

We should do something about this, Ante.

This entire power distribution network in USA is very, very badly planned and put into practice. We were actually learning at the university how not to screw the power network like that of Northern America. :D
But back to your post... its because of looks, safety and it's easier to maintain underground. Just like any other wiring (optics, metallic cables...). ;)

I'm still working on my yard
Cleaned out 40' along the back fence, getting ready to put a patio in
I had to move the black raspberry bushes that I planted years ago
I opened this are up to the pool in '08, just getting back to the patio now
Patio will be about 15'x16' 6", picked up enough free 18" blocks off craigslist

I'm leaving about a 3' area along the fence for a garden
I'm hoping the 2 Rhody's I uncovered will get bigger
I also uncovered some monarda that I put out there a few years ago
Lilac bushes are starting to bloom

Doesn't look like much right now, still need to haul away debris
The PT board along the fence is to discourage skunks from digging
My yards mostly fenced in, but they still wander in & then want to dig their way out

I built a new patio out back behind the pool -patio blocks were free
It's about 15x15', more room to spread out, table & chairs were free
Plus moving the big swing to the back leaves room for a row of loungers near the pool
All the landscape timbers were free
Picked up 11 of the loungers off craigslist for free
So I nice free addition...just took some labor
And now have gardens along 3 sides of this area

Jack Daw, to be exact, we're at Lat. 8.2, Long. 125. Informally, this is northern Mindanao Island in the Philippines; we're about an hour S.E. from Cagayan de Oro, near Camp Phillips in Libona Municipality, Bukidnon Province. We're "out in the sticks" here, really... not on any maps, and Google Earth doesn't show much. All I know is that I farm bananas amongst our coconut trees and we're surrounded by Del Monte pineapple plantation!

I ended up building a permanent support structure for a screenhouse over the new patio
It was VERY hot - direct summer sun
I then added some rope lighting.....everywhere
Then added a misting system & a misting fan

Next year I will build a pergola over the picnic table
Wisteria & grapes will grow over top of the pergola

I must spend too much time in the gardens! I'm always thinking that nothing ever grows or does much of anything.... you? Then I was browsing some old pics and found this one from May:
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0173.jpg

Now in mid August I've come to the conclusion that some things do in fact grow .... For scale the yucca rostrata in the center is almost 6' tall. The E. Glaucum on the right was from seed and never did much last year or potted over the winter and the newest leaves are coming out about 7' long... same with the E. Maurellii:woohoonaner:

How sad. Sorry to hear that. I guess tho look at the bright side you tried and you get to do it all over again. Good luck there. I know last year I went into the hospital in September I was in and out tell November I lost my plumerias. I had some real nice ones I also lost my siam ruby and my dwarf red. I was not here to dig them up. I did replace my dwarf red and I have one plumaria now. I know how you must feel there

Sugarcane, Cavendish, dragonfruit, a few pineapples, the place where the veinte cohol and Pisang Ceylon will end up, Brazilian(The tall one), tiny DC that still haven't grown that you can't see and on the far right a bit of the dwarf red (I believe it is) Also some watermelon vines in there...
