Anybody planning some specific weekend chores around your banana plants?
I am planning on getting more compost and mulch over my banana plants as growing season is definitely here.

I have to trim the winter damaged leaves from my basjoo now that they are pushing new leaves and check my Musella lasiocarpa, which already has 3 pups! And I have to prep the new bed for the m. "mekong giant", m. "gran nain" and m. sumatrana that will be arriving next week.
I also have to see what else I can do (if anything) for a very sick musa ??? I received because it was unwanted but the leaves are so wilted and yellow/brown that I have no idea what it is (I was told it was supposed to be a "red banana"). When I repotted it last weekend I think there were more ants and eggs than soil!
.........never a dull moment! :)

O Gosh, I still have to cut down some that have flowered with no leafs, and remove tons of pups. I would just love is someone would come over and dig out some or many pups and just take them home with them. LoL

I need to weed around them, then I think I will put some mulch around the bases because it's already so very hot here and the leaves get so droopy during the hottest part of the day!

Enjoy the fact that it's raining and I won't have to water.

When I was home this weekend for Memorial Day I gave them fert and pruned them a bit. They're really starting to get going with the warm weather now. Interestingly enough, Raja Puri has recovered the quickest from winter conditions, but during the winter it seems to suffer a bit more than my Namwah. My other bananas are starting to get going, albeit a bit more slowly. Mysore still is showing BSV symptoms, so I plan on getting rid of it and replacing it with Pisang Klotek.
This week I might try to get Pisang Ceylon planted up in Santa Clara, or maybe next week.

If I remember it right, your Raja Puri was fruiting. How is the fruit coming along?

Unfortunately, I lost the fruit with the winter cold. But I should be getting another flower or two from that mat within a month or two.

Sorry to hear that. With warmer weather coming up, your chances of getting more flowers and fruits are good. Good luck!

The aged manure is already nicely worked into my mats with some added compost and mulched over, but here are my little helpers working on next time's fertilizer....http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=53321 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=53321&ppuser=13376)
