I received my banana plant order yesterday from Aloha Tropicals. I ordered Kru, Red Iholena, Ebun musak, African Rhinohorn, Pitago, Enanao Gigante, Golden Pillow, Kaulau, Popoulu, Monthan. I have some of these varieties at my Santa Barbara house and some already here in Hawaii. You can never have too many banana plants or varieties. They are little tc plants.

They should here. I had a harder time in Santa Barbara with many varieties.

Of the ones you've ordered from them, I've ordered Kru, Ebun musak, African Rhinohorn, Pitago, & Golden Pillow. Haven't had any long enough for them to fruit and be certain of what they are. But so far the Rhinohorn and Kru are indeed red on the p-stem as they are supposed to be, and match descriptions I've read of them. Out of maybe a dozen plants from Aloha, I had only one die and it was replaced for free.

I have purchased plants from Andy at Aloha Tropicals before. Like Rob, I haven't had any fruit yet. Andy is slow to reply to emails. When I placed this order I emailed Andy and requested that he mail the plants on a specific date as I will be out of town in a few weeks. This request has been used before with other sellers. The last thing a seller wants is for their plants to arrive and sit around while you are not home and then possibly have to replace plants. It may not be honest but it works. I also request a Monday ship date so the plants dont sleep over the weekend in the post office. Less time in the box the better!

Any closer to finding a permanent home to plant things in the ground? They are going to be tough on your back again to move, especially how fast they can grow there. Good luck!

Aloha Harvey,
I trust you had a nice Thanksgiving. We have decided to build a house here. Danielle is researching builders and contactors. We like the 800 foot elevation so are looking in this area of Holualoa. We want this to be our last house and will build it with everything we always wanted (three car garage with a lift, media room). I hear you on the lovely back. I have close to 90 banana varieties potted and 240 bromeliad varieites plus another fifty or so really cool plants (heliconias, clivias, gingers, cannas, fruit trees). We will keep the Santa Barbara house as well. I will keep you posted.

Andrew, aloha. Good to see your post because I was just thinking about you the other day. One of the plumerias that I got from you is blooming - a nice red one - and it made me think of you and wonder how you're doing in Hawaii.
The Sat. after Thanksgiving we had a frost that I wasn't prepared for and the plumerias are still outside. They were under a tall pine tree so they weren't damaged. I guess it's time to put the tender things in the gh; although, it's back up in the 70's.
Again, good to hear from you.

Aloha Terry,
I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. We are doing great and loving Hawaii. I'm glad the plumerias are doing well. Mine in Santa Barbara bloomed all summer. We have lots here in Hawaii. When it gets warmer by you let me know if you want some other varieties.
Take care,
Andrew

Aloha Matt,
I hope all is well. The growth I am witnessing is amazing! I never knew plants could grow so fast. I am growing all sorts of things. I no longer have gophers to worry about here. I still have them in Santa Barbara though.
I have mongoose that are loving my melons, cucumbers, squash, eggplant and other veggies. They haven't started eating my tomatoes. You could put a saddle on and ride the jungle slugs! They will take down young veggie plants as well. I will post the new banana eating bugs I have encountered soon. Winter is an interesting word.

I notice you have AT&T. They are absolutely terrible for Hawaii in general. I had them when I first came here in 2004 and switched to Verizon in 2006. I got tired of all the dreaded no service spots with AT&T.

I haven't had any problems here on the Big Island. I have had AT&T for about 14 years. The type of phone plays a big part. In the early years with Palm Treos my reception in Santa Barbara was spotty. It got a lot better with the first generation of iPhone.

Wow, congrats and what a collection! I hope to get myself a red Kru next year. In the mean time, I only have 5 varieties, but they're happily crowding my bedroom, safe from our cold wintery weather outside. (well, most of the time it's just cool nonstop rain) By next year I hope to add 6 more varieties to my list.

Not really. That was one reason why we moved here. I grew up in New York and always hated the cold.

Looks like you are going to be busy planting! I dug the Ae-Ae yesterday that I got from you. The pstem is still relatively small and we are forecast to have temps down near freezing tonight and the next night. I figured since it was still small and I could dig it and overwinter it in a greenhouse so easily that there was no reason to take the chance. Hope you are doing well!

Congrats to your collection, we are bananists and bananaholic.
I live partielly in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. I also have one banana collection, but it is not possible to get your cultivars to Brazil because of the import restrictions by one new law from 2005.
But I try to get contact with one banana researcher at Embrapa.
Best wishes

Aloha Brent,
Sorry for the delay. I was in Minnesota last week freezing! I think it was smart to protect the AeAe. I'm happy she is still doing well for you. All of the plants we have shared are doing well. The dwarf niño is doing great! I have most of the bananas in 20 gallon pots while they await there new home. Pots are crazy expensive here so I use the 20 gallon tubs with rope handles. I buy them at Walmart and drill holes in the bottom of them. We started looking at land to build a house. Landscaping it will be exciting and painful. Not much soil here just volcanic rock! Jack hammer time! Take care and Merry Christmas.

Hi,
but the volcanic soil is very fertile, see also Tenerife and the Canary Islands! The Canary Islands are the banana growing area of Spain. I saw many banana plantations in the north of Tenerife, especially in the Orotava Valley near Puerto de la Cruz. I was many times on Tenerife, I love the island because of the banana plantations very much, but I could not buy land and house, because the prices increased so I could not save enough money. So that I looked in South America, at first in Peru, then one friend brought me one Brazilian student to me, she became my guest daughter later to finish her study at the university of Hamburg and to make the doctor. She told me that her dad was selling his banana plantation and I wanted one part of his banana plantation. But he has already sold all. I traveled with her and my wife in 2007 to Brazil to the first time. Her mom found one chácara. The neighbour of this chácara wanted to sell his chácara to me, so that I purchased the chácara in 2008, it was much cheaper than on Tenerife!
You should think about banana growing of Tenerife, this is possible at your new home like on Tenerife! The Canary Islands are also volcanic like Hawaii!!! Make it so like the Canarian banana farmers!
Best wishes

The soil is fertile, but on his island there are many areas where there is no soil and just miles and miles of virgin volcanic rock.

Aloha Terry,
I hope all is well with you. Life is great here on the Big Island! Contact me once it warms up and we can discuss plumerias. Have a happy holiday.

Rob, that doesn't make the soil that old. I will have to truck in soil and also creat a compost pile. Maybe in January we should take a ride to Chris Carters place to pick up some more varieties.
