Ten more varieties I picked up

I received my banana plant order yesterday from Aloha Tropicals. I ordered Kru, Red Iholena, Ebun musak, African Rhinohorn, Pitago, Enanao Gigante, Golden Pillow, Kaulau, Popoulu, Monthan. I have some of these varieties at my Santa Barbara house and some already here in Hawaii. You can never have too many banana plants or varieties. They are little tc plants.

They should here. I had a harder time in Santa Barbara with many varieties.

Of the ones you've ordered from them, I've ordered Kru, Ebun musak, African Rhinohorn, Pitago, & Golden Pillow. Haven't had any long enough for them to fruit and be certain of what they are. But so far the Rhinohorn and Kru are indeed red on the p-stem as they are supposed to be, and match descriptions I've read of them. Out of maybe a dozen plants from Aloha, I had only one die and it was replaced for free.

I have purchased plants from Andy at Aloha Tropicals before. Like Rob, I haven't had any fruit yet. Andy is slow to reply to emails. When I placed this order I emailed Andy and requested that he mail the plants on a specific date as I will be out of town in a few weeks. This request has been used before with other sellers. The last thing a seller wants is for their plants to arrive and sit around while you are not home and then possibly have to replace plants. It may not be honest but it works. I also request a Monday ship date so the plants dont sleep over the weekend in the post office. Less time in the box the better!

Any closer to finding a permanent home to plant things in the ground? They are going to be tough on your back again to move, especially how fast they can grow there. Good luck!

Aloha Harvey,
I trust you had a nice Thanksgiving. We have decided to build a house here. Danielle is researching builders and contactors. We like the 800 foot elevation so are looking in this area of Holualoa. We want this to be our last house and will build it with everything we always wanted (three car garage with a lift, media room). I hear you on the lovely back. I have close to 90 banana varieties potted and 240 bromeliad varieites plus another fifty or so really cool plants (heliconias, clivias, gingers, cannas, fruit trees). We will keep the Santa Barbara house as well. I will keep you posted.

Andrew, aloha. Good to see your post because I was just thinking about you the other day. One of the plumerias that I got from you is blooming - a nice red one - and it made me think of you and wonder how you're doing in Hawaii.

The Sat. after Thanksgiving we had a frost that I wasn't prepared for and the plumerias are still outside. They were under a tall pine tree so they weren't damaged. I guess it's time to put the tender things in the gh; although, it's back up in the 70's.

Again, good to hear from you.

Terry

Aloha Terry,
I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. We are doing great and loving Hawaii. I'm glad the plumerias are doing well. Mine in Santa Barbara bloomed all summer. We have lots here in Hawaii. When it gets warmer by you let me know if you want some other varieties.

Take care,

Andrew

Very nice collection! Next time I go to the Big Island and if it's possible, I would love to check your garden out!

Aloha Matt,

I hope all is well. The growth I am witnessing is amazing! I never knew plants could grow so fast. I am growing all sorts of things. I no longer have gophers to worry about here. I still have them in Santa Barbara though.
I have mongoose that are loving my melons, cucumbers, squash, eggplant and other veggies. They haven't started eating my tomatoes. You could put a saddle on and ride the jungle slugs! They will take down young veggie plants as well. I will post the new banana eating bugs I have encountered soon. Winter is an interesting word.

I notice you have AT&T. They are absolutely terrible for Hawaii in general. I had them when I first came here in 2004 and switched to Verizon in 2006. I got tired of all the dreaded no service spots with AT&T.

I haven't had any problems here on the Big Island. I have had AT&T for about 14 years. The type of phone plays a big part. In the early years with Palm Treos my reception in Santa Barbara was spotty. It got a lot better with the first generation of iPhone.

Wow, congrats and what a collection! I hope to get myself a red Kru next year. In the mean time, I only have 5 varieties, but they're happily crowding my bedroom, safe from our cold wintery weather outside. (well, most of the time it's just cool nonstop rain) By next year I hope to add 6 more varieties to my list.
