Just noticed that the Halibuts I caught were right and left. I think lefties are unusual. Tony?

Although a member of the left-eyed flounder family, about 40 percent of California halibut have their eyes on the right side. The color is dark brown to black on ....In that water were lucky they don't have 3 eyes

Sunday morning I'm taking my new 12' Okuma surf rod for a spin. Pun intended! I'm going to soak some mackerel and squid and see if I can get a bigger Leo in a spot that produces them in good numbers.

Spinning or conventional ? I have a 15' uglystick surf rod w/penn 750 reel

Spinning. I paired it with an Okuma 55b.

What style of casting do you use with the 15 footer?

Cool.If you can learn to cast say a penn jig master conventional reel,I think you will find they will cast further than a spinning reel, have better drag systems and hold more line .I never learned how so I use spinning reels

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread

I use a conventional for deep sea, but I have never been able to cast it very well. I recently watched a few videos on baitcasting and I think I could figure it out with a newer low profile type baitcaster. Mine is an old Diawa Sealine 50H like this one..

It would be hard with that old timer. All it takes is practice.I can cast the smaller ones. The records for distance are held by people using conventional reels. With conventional reels there is no line twist and they just do a much better job.The drags are much more smooth.Since you are really getting into this you may want to try one out someday I think you'll be happy you did.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread

The arrival

Fished an LC for about 20 minutes pulling salad on every cast. Then a huge Bendo and off went Moby Dick stripping off 15 lb braid like it was nothing. I tried going tighter and tighter but could not get it turned or even slowed down. This thing was a freight train! I continued to tighten the drag until I thought My new 8-6 Clarus might snap in two, then it snapped the braid and off it went with my LC. Never had a chance!

Switch to a Big Hammer that's been marinating in Crack juice for two weeks, first cast and bam! Nice little YFC

Cast it back out and bendo, long run again, this time I go a little easier on the drag but it snaps the braid again.

Tie another marinated Big Hammer on, cast, bam...a foul hooked SNGF

Then another SNGF, then a little Ray. This guy jumped clean out of the water!

A little while later I get another nice sized YFC.

Then another SNGF about the same size.

Last cast of the day came when another moby dick took off and I couldn't slow it down ending in another lost Big Hammer. Holy smokes batman!

Really fun day even after loosing my LC and two big hammers. I saw a big Leo swim right in front of me so I'm guessing that's what was breaking my braid.

Just did some research and it seems I need to use Double Palomar knots with braid. Maybe that's my problem on these big ones?

If I ever hit the lottery I will take you and your friend on a catching trip to beat all. Notice I did not say "fishing" as we always were cathing fish of many species or whatever. Believe me, it would be a supreme pleasure for me to do this. Cross your fingers, wish me luck and do anything that might make this happen.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread

Ante, what size hooks do they use? HaHa I never had the nerve to go on a commercial fishing boat as I have heard too many tales of woe about them. Having spent some time in Key West, it was not uncommon for a good size storm to raise it's head. The seas could change in just a few minutes and you had better beware. from a low wave to sometimes over 10 foot. This may not sound too bad but the distance between the waves was often only 4 to 8 foot making them very dangerous. Still love fishing and hope to get things in order so we can do so again soon.

While in Florida I caught Spotted Seatrout, pomoano, sheephead, red fish, red snapper mangrove snapper, snook, amberjackand, flounder. If I could get back there I know exactly where to go.The condo manager would let park in the parking lot in return for a few fish.

I was reading a website about it that said if you hoop a large area you'll be busy the whole time because he doesn't like to leave the bait soaking too long, basically going from net to net all night. He also said the sea lions can be a real problem.
