Now can you guess what the finished product looks like and what it's needed for relative to the planter boxes! |

Klunge has been redefined so many time it is hard to tell which one to use: kludge [klooj] Show IPA noun, Computer Slang. a software or hardware configuration that, while inelegant, inefficient, clumsy, or patched together, succeeds in solving a specific problem or performing a particular task. or Something not built according a design or plan, but assembled from whatever is available to 'make do. |

While the 1/4 inch hardware cloth l used is still in great shape after 15 years, but it did cost more. That wire is light gauge and will easily straighten if pulled over 2 inch fence pole and I don't recall the exact angle we used, plus it is quicker and easier to bend it against the curve instead of cutting it. BTW, adding some roof flashing will prevent climbers. |

Mice can fit through 1/2" x 1/2".

Re: Guess what this KLUDGE is for!
I have had pretty good luck using vinyl fencing. It has to be very taught and I usually make sure that there is about a foot of it buried just under the ground that sits flat in front of the the garden. What happens is the animals actually step on it when they walk up to the fence and encounter it as they start to dig as it just below the surface. The vinyl fencing can also be easily installed at an angle... easy for people to get in an out too.

BTW -- forgot to mention I saw a tunnel going thru the box that was filled with medium. Time to get out the Tom Cat worms. Think I will pull up the other box and staple h/w cloth to the bottom. Don't know if the moles are chewing the seedling roots but this will give me a control to see if it will be a problem. |
Re: Guess what this KLUDGE is for!
My problem was rats and squirles eating my tomatoes. A have-a-heart electric fence put an end to that.

Yes Klunge in the UK means something completely different, but that's my immature sense of humour, I apologise. |
Re: Guess what this KLUDGE is for!
FYI, it looks like you are using 1/2" x 1/2" welded wire opposed to 1/4" hardware cloth. All the hardware cloth I've ever bought was woven like a cloth.
I think it would be better to nailed or staple flashing to the top of the boards and just skip the wire on the top. If it was an above ground raised planter I would recommend using large clay tiles as the bottom. |

Easy to find and stands upright when flattened. The panels get stored when the seedlings get more mature. Never had a problem at that point. BTW --- Nick will give me a few ARH pups when they grow out. Definitely want to try these guys. Dan |
