This is your dog doing this damage?? How about, when he gets near your plants, smack him in the head w/ rolled up newspaper & tell him next time you'll pretend he's a squirrel
oops, I wrote this at bottom of last page & didn't see the above.
Your mutt or neighbors?

Oh that's gut wrenching to have that happen. We've recently adopted a bassett hound that didn't work out for someone and really need to find her a home. She buries her chew bones and is just all around annoying. The nanas and other tropicals are going to be needing to go out soon so I guess we'll need to put a little turkey wire fence around each one until the dog thing is taken care of. I sure don't want to have damage like you went through after overwintering carefully inside!

So sorry to hear about that!! That's a big plant for a dog to tear up!
(I was joking in my other post that I wasn't going to ask what you did with the dog. LOL)

Hey Migael,

Wouldn't you love to hear what Patty says when she sees this pic. Just pulled it off the Yahoo Popular news pics. We all know how much she loves those cuddly little tree rats. Poodle nursing 3 baby tree rats.

What's this world coming to???

HS!!! I mean Patty. So sorry.

This is what happens when you post after just waking up in the Am. Or after too many beers later on. Woof!

Some good news - finally caught one of the critters that's been chewing my pole beans, a friggin rat! Been setting a rat trap inside the Havaheart (on the trip paddle) since you never know how big the perp is gonna be. If the smaller trap just knicks him he's still caught. Got a big possum this way and all he had was a sore ear.

The rest of the tale is truly bizarre - went out in AM to check trap and saw a big rabbit dragging the dead rat out of the Havaheart with the trap still attchd by the neck. Were they related, cousins maybe??? Was the rabbit horny and he was checking to see if he was still warm??? Or was he just hungry? You tell me.

Dan

Dan, I never heard of your bunny/rat story! I don't think rabbits eat meat (?), so maybe it was horny LOL - or very lonely.

Just in the last couple years I've seen a few Red squirrels in the neighborhood, none in my yard . The fruit was already on the ground so it could of been anything.

Patty,

It happened a second time. This time it was a bird in the trap. He looked partially chewed on but the chewer wasn't around at the time. Something around here is hungry.

And today saw 6 more newly planted polebean seedlings chewed up. The trap remains ready.

Rabbits are really bad on young tender plants--especially if there is not much other food around. As for the rabbit eating the rat--if the carcass was down to bones, it may have been trying to eat the bones for calcium--all sorts of animals will gnaw on bones and antlers for the calcium.

A couple years ago, I had a problem so bad I could not get a single winter plant to grow--everything was eaten to the ground as soon as it was planted.
I had a fence around the garden, but one side was the barn--I suspected a pack rat, but it is possible that rabbits were getting thru the fence some way.

Hey Dan, I wonder if it's a possum. They ate a leg off a squirrel that was dead in my trap... thru the cage. That or raccoon. Try peanut butter for bait...they love it.
Birds or bunnies are getting your bean seedlings.

I was pulling weeds in back the other day & almost touched a baby bunny just sitting still. I jumped from surprise & it wouldn't move. I went inside & cut up a carrot & put it in front of him. 2 more jumped up in front of me & ran away...scared the hell outa me! Mama musta nested back there... they sure are cute when babies! Now, I gotta trap that big cat that's been hanging out in the garden. I've seen it back there past winter so it must be a stray.

sbl -- I saw a big bunny in the BBQ area a few times. The trap is set and will get him with a little luck.

Patty -- I am doing the peanut butter thing and it works great - thanks! It could be a possum - got one last year using cheese. Meanwhile, the backup seedlings will fill in where the beans got chewed down to a nub. If they had branched out I leave them and new runners will sprout later.

When I was in Vietnam they used to take us out of the field once in a while to support forward firebases for a few days. Those bases were overrun with rats. Sleeping at night was tough with rats running over your chest and legs. Took a beer can and cut out the top lid. I put an electrical blasting cap inside and rigged the trap with food on a string tied to one wire stripped bare. Then attached a small battery. A rat would tug on the food causing one wire to touch the side of the can closing the circuit. Bye bye rat. Rerigged the trap and went back to sleep. One base was so bad, firebase Snuffy, that we were glad to return to the field. Imagine that!

I check the Havaheart trap daily. Afraid the critters in the trap will attract the bobcats.

Dan
