Don't know what it is ,but the plant is very healthy.

I have some from seed that are 6 months old and their not even close to getting buds. You must be doing something right. Are you gonig to hand pollinate them ?

I don't know of anything special I'm doing... soil is the same banana potting mix I used on my potted bananas (1/3 each of peat, compost, and pearlite) and I use a weak dose of miracle grow on them. I did watch youtube demonstrations on pollinating, but feels to me like I'd be molesting them. I bought a brush from the women's beauty section at WalMart to try brushing them. We'll see how that goes.

They don't mind the brush. Some of my plants will not fruit unless I hand pollinate, not sure about Incarnata

Hey Howard - that looks like a "Lady Margaret" to me. I bought one last year, and it looked like two small plants. I guess I got overly ambitious and greedy and separated them in the heat of summer and then lost them both. Some day I'm going to get another one and again try to add this red and white beauty to my collection of mostly purple varieties! Ps I think the pics are great - good luck with her!

Here's a little picture of a wild P. Incarnata from last year. It grows wild here in KY and really covers one corner of our back fence each year.

I haven't got any fruit this year. Last year, by the end of summer, the vines were hanging full of fruit. I had picked up some of the fruits that had fallen and forgotten them on the porch. They fell into the flower beds and now, I have little vines coming up everywhere.

If you get fruit this year and want to trade seed let me know

Incarnata grows like a weed here. I know of a stretch of railroad tracks that has it growing all alongside. I would be glad to trade seed.

Good. I'll send a P.M. when I'm done shoveling D.G. ad fixing the water heater.

Re: Passiflora

Okay, I'm finding posts that state that P. incarnata needs a different vine near by to pollinate if you want fruit. I was told it's a self pollinator with male and females on the same plant.
Can someone confirm or clarify?

I tried serching for this a couple of weeks ago. Every site had a different answer.I know it's not a matter of having male and female flowers on the same plant, there all complete flowers. What matters is if it's self fertile. Some Passion Vines need an other unrelated vine for cross pollination.

If a vine shares a common root, but grows as an individual vine, will the vines be related? The Incarnata that I have along our back fence, seems to mostly share a common root and it produces viable fruit.

I just serched again to find out if Incarnata is self fertile. It looks like it isn't. If you have other plants in your area they may be getting cross pollinated by bees.I have some passion vines that I have to pollinate with a different variety to get fruit.

BillynJennifer 07-23-2011 08:53 AM

Re: Passiflora

It is a really good possibility, then, that bees are probably visiting other vines and then stopping by mine. They're doing a good job.

Re: Passiflora

There are two passiflora Ruby Glow in my neighbor ,and I have two I started from cuttings.I have cross pollinated all four plants with every passiflora I have.Still unable to get fruit. But every year I'll find a few fruit on each plant. Some how they are getting pollinated by bees I guess and from what other passion vine ,I don't know.I can't find any information on which passion vine will cross pollinate Ruby Glow.

BillynJennifer 07-23-2011 09:35 AM

Re: Passiflora

With Incarnata being such a hardy plant, could I cross that with something more tropical with an end result of seeds that will form a passion vine with the hardiness of Incarnata but the colors of the tropical plant?

I've never tried grafting. Is that as tough to do as it sounds? I would definitley like to try my hand at something like that.

No bloom photos today, but these are my neighbor's Passiflora edulis vines. She planted them about 7 months ago, and they have been growing like weeds. I've seen 3 blooms so I know it is the P. edulis which seems very common around here. The fruit is still bright green, but I think it will be the yellow (var flavicarpa?) when mature. I had no idea these grew so fast.

The fence they are on is 20', and they are reaching for more room.

When you get seeds from your Foetida, I would really like to buy some from you. Since it is more tropical than our climate allows, I guess I would bring it in during the winter.
