Default Calathea Cylindrica Tolerates Full Sunlight and Low Humidity

It is the only calathea I know of that tolerates full sunlight and low humidity. You can grow it as you would a banana plant or corn, for that matter.

On June 4 2026, I planted potted Calathea (Goeppertia) Cylindrica and cannas in the ground, in front of my greenhouse, in the Chicago area, zone 6a. The following photos were taken on September 5, 2026. Almost all of the growth that you see occurred after planting in the ground. Note the green flowers. It may interest you to know that there is a variety with blue flowers called Calathea burle-marxii 'Blue Ice' but, if it was as easy to grow as the green flowered variety, everybody would be growing it.
