Just picked up a Big Jim loquat and a Mexican Cream guava and each plant has a decent size extra limb that start down low and probably need pruning.
The guava branch is 18" long and slightly smaller than a pencil at the thickest part. The loquat is about 18" and thicker than a pencil, it is taller than the main plant and affects the balance. My main question is I have about 6-8 weeks of decent weather left, is that enough time or should I wait until spring?? Second question is should I try to get a rootstock for the loquat and graft it. I have only seen thick branches air layered online and wonder if there is a way to manage such a skinny one (weight).

loquat seeds sprout readily

I prefer propping the branch and seem to get faster rooting when the branch is closeset to vertical.

I have no idea before/after winter in your location.
I layer calamondin year round.
