FYI - discussion about the recent downtime should go to sorry about the downtime. Sorry, I think I helped this thread go off-track with my rat post (which was OT enough as it was) by making reference to the downtime.

Well Tog when I saw you posted to this thread I couldn't wait to see what exotic thing you had killed. I though maybe you took out one of them Long or Short Tail Macaques. Or maybe one of them wild boars you talk about. Or maybe a monitor lizard or two. But a couple of caterpillars? lol Harveyc got you beat with his rat!

Hey Caloosamusa - the locals here all hate snakes even though there are no poisonous snakes on the island and try to kill them at every opportunity. When we were protecting what turned out to be a tree boa, we had 3 guys trying to kill it - they had already killed the other hatchlings/siblings. Very interesting was the way it worked it's way into the roots of the grass in the lawn (tropical grass is very deep) and disappeared from view.

So far the Long and Short tails haven't been much of a bother, but them wild boars! Them pigs (literally) took out a couple of my newly established 'naners. That really made me sore. As my nursery is in the middle of a jungle and I have no one staying there, they are indeed a problem. My dog can't seem to do much as they come in a gang. I am thinking of a pretty wicked thing like a pit with pungi sticks. Perhaps I can have a wild ham buffet later. ![]() |

Re: What did you kill today?
Island Cassie, we have the same problem with locals around here! I'm glad there are no native venomus snakes on your island. I'm also glad to hear you will not be posting on this thread about snakes you've killed!!! I've not seen Dr. A in a couple of days, hopfully by monday or tuesday.
Tog Tan!! I've not seen a pungi stick trap in a long time, they are a federal offense here, but Go for it!!!! Eat some pork ribs for me!!! Good hunting!!! Best wishes, |

Today I destroyed a brazilian pepper sprout (invasive exotic)!
Island Cassie, I just posted a picture of one of our venomous locals here in Florida. It is a pygmy Rattlesnake. It's the second one I've found on my bike route! I did not kill my venomous friend but did relocate it. Best wishes to all! ![]() Last edited by Caloosamusa : 02-13-2009 at 09:25 PM. Reason: Add |

Well, loks like that every part of the world has its own dangerous reptile. This one is ours from Biokovo Park of nature, where I live. It is Vipera ammodytes, quite dangerous snake.
Regards. ![]()

Thanks Tog Tan,
Even though it is a native species here, I've had little experience with it. The second one I caught was much better behaved than the first. I released the first one on my "farm," (which is nowhere near my house)! Rodent eating creatures are welcome even if they are cold blooded. Thank you for the information about their temperment. Experience is a good teacher. Dalmatiansoap, Nice viper!!! I would like to see it in its native habitat up close like your picture!! Way cool!!!! Tog,
Pungi stakes should work good on the pigs. You don't need a pit. Just mark the stake areas on open ground near the plants with orange marking paint. That is so you don't walk into it. Ran into a Pungi staked area once on a patrol in Viet Nam, somewhere along the Cambodian border. After passing the word back many times to "WATCH WHERE YOU STEP", one banana head in the other squad nailed his ankle with one. Patrol shot, waited all day for the Medevac chopper. Must use fired bamboo for strength. Dan |

Can you say Wester Diamond Back Rattle Snake, Black Widow spider,Brown reckloos spider and lastly my most dreaded creature Bark Scorpions?
Snakes i leave Alon. All the rest get a free trip to Heaven. Vegas or the Mohave desert has a large variety of Venomous creatures. One has to be careful gardening here! and you must spray the intier perimeter of you house 4 times a year unless you like living with thing that can put you in the hospital

Tammy...that's terrible news, but wonderful that you saved you little friends. I'm sure we'll be able to repopulate your garden when it's time.
