A boatload of fungus gnats! Damned things are everywhere due to the steer poop I used. Sheesh, worse than fruit flies.

Scot,
I'm afraid to ask, this being winter and all, did you put that cow crap on your potted plants --- in the house??? How well rotted was it? Or wasn't it? Did anybody perhaps ask if you were using the new hillbilly version of "plug-it-in, plug-it-in" room deodorizer? Dan |

Actually, I had just grabbed some mixed soil I had outside to fill a potted fern. Didn't remember that I mixed steer doogie in with it last fall. It really didn't have much of an odor, so I guess it had been fairly well composted. But the gnats, Yikes!

Scot,
The gnatz tell it all. It was still ripe and stinky - to them anyway. Just moved my entire stock of potted plants back outside today. From the house and the garage with heater. Saw webs all over the quenepa - Spanish Lime - and the last remaining, still alive, ensette Maurelii from Sandy. Even the Key lime from Dave from the Gardenweb. The house in the winter is one big bug friendly growth environment - hot and dry - give us all a break!!! Looking forward to continued mild weather patterns - here in supposedly blamly So Fla. The latest 10 day forcast looks good. All of my cut down banana mats have fat, vigorous looking pups that will start accelerated growth in pace with the warming trend. April starts with megadoses of Vermicompost and regular watering. And this year the new Florida grape arbor starts with 3 year old vines - all of which have broken bud already. Everybody think warm - it's just around the corner - some corners being longer that others. NTWHIC! Dan Muscadines rule here, y'all!!! |

I killed aphids. I looked close & saw them all over the tips of my brugmansias & then saw some at a few nana leaf tips. I blasted them with my shotgun.
Just kidding...I sprayed them w/ hot water & dawn dishsoap & will check tomorrow. I almost lost a 5 in 1 apple tree to them last summer! Dan, do you make wine w/ those grapes? I grow concord here ...good jelly & juice. This is the time to prune before they wake up.

I know this wasn't the intent of this thread, but I feel much better having killed this big rat in my shop than letting it eat up my baby Variegated wild Asian banana! To be honest, I killed this rat yesterday but since someone also killed the 'org, I couldn't get it posted. Glad to have the forum back!

I'm with you there Harvey - kill those rodents. We have a constant battle to keep them out of the generator house and stop them gnawing the generator cables or making nests in there!! I practise goodwill to all living things except rats when they are in my patch. I have seen them eating coconut flesh in the campo and their coats would put a mink to shame, but I don't think there would be a big market for rat skin coats no matter what you renamed them!!

I bet I'm the only one in the 'org whose dad once shot a pistol in the house to get a rat!

I once hunted rats inside the house when I lived in Manhattan Beach. I used a CO2 pellet rifle!

I've used a pellet gun in my pigeon coop. Dad used a .38 special.

I have killed nothing today, but when I lived up North (Florida) I released two Elaphae obsoletta quadrivitatta (native yellow rats snakes) in my home when I had a problem with an endangered mouse species one winter in my house. Problem solved, they can go where cats cannot, and they don't shed fur. Red rat snakes work just as well or if in California Rosy Boas.

I'm only vaguely familiar with The Epicrates species of the Dominican Republic.
They are Boas so not only birds(their primary prey) they should prey on rodents also. I am unfamiliar however with their temperment, and cannot say that they would make good house-mates. Someone locally there could give you better information. I'll ask a friend Dr. (herpetologist) and get back with you. They make life rough for those banana eating critters! Best wishes, Thanks Jarred for fixing the website!!!!! Last edited by Caloosamusa : 02-10-2009 at 09:50 PM. Reason: Add Thanks |

My brother-in-law had a tenant that shot flies on the ceiling LOL. Bullet holes everywhere. He got evicted. He was a nut case.
Jarred, what was wrong with the org...what happened?
