Re: Store bought cavendish taste like cardboard
Home grown is always better than store bought even if the fruit never mature,

I have had some taste like nothing, others really sweet like candy. I noticed it depends on where they are coming from as well.

Here in Spain we mainly have the Cavendish type coming from the Canary Islands (Brier, Pequeña Enana... there are a few).
I haven´t had the chance to try all the varietes you folks have tried (hope my namwah sorts that soon...), but I think its safe to say that they can be quite good. It seems that as the journey is shorter to mainland Spain, compared to the journey other bananas must do, so they let them ripen for longer. Of course the best banana stays in the Canaries for their own consumption. They are perfectly ripe, and they have other varietes for local use, such as Manzano, Orinoco, and I think that a type of Gros Michel too. There are also banana from Ecuador, Honduras etc from Dole in supermarkets. They are not bad... but I find the flavour less complex... They tend to be sweet to very sweet, but just that. And the texture is not that good. Cultesa | Plataneras Its a nursery from Tenerife that sells plant to farmers, but also sells to particulars I believe. You can see the comercial varietes first. Then they also offer Topocho (Orinoco that is), and Manzano. Last edited by pabloo120 : 08-02-2014 at 10:35 AM. |

Being on the road yesterday and super hungry, I went to a supermarket to buy a Chiquita Cavendish.
Yuck: I have to admit I have definitely spoiled myself with homegrown bananas, because that store-bought one was the worst I had in a long time. Worse than cardboard. |

Tony, good to see you back on the org.
I bought some Cavendish at the grocery store today, and they were better than no bananas. And worse than the Cavendish that are ripe in my yard. And much bigger than the ones in my yard! I'll keep buying them when I don't have ripe bananas at home, but I have them most of the time now. ![]() |

Cavendish seem to vary in the store. Like an earlier posted stated, the good ones are sweet, but that's it. The bad one are just, oh god.... I'd rather eat banana flavored cardboard.
You also have to eat them at the right time, they are only good right before any brown spots develop. After that they are banana bread material only... Quote:
Those look like some interesting varieties, can an expert weigh in whether these are any different from grand nain/other mainstream commercial Cavendish cultivars? |

I've had Cavendish on the side of the road in Bermuda and they were some of the best bananas I've tried. I consider the store bought to be better than none at all.

Sadly, I've never had anything but store-bought Cavendish. Was born in 1963 and I live in Washington state, west of the Cascades, so it's not possible to grow my own. I'm wondering if there's a way to order (even just one) real banana (Gros Michel or anything those in the know would recommend) that might be shipped to me. I'd be happy to pay for it. Just want to try a real banana.
