Its great that your Orinoco produced a pup. My Orinoco corm produced some pups but they are so close to each other. I hope this isnt an issue later on lol

Hmmm how long have yours been up? I saw that they are quite close, my fourth one is coming up pretty close to one of the others. I'm not even sure how many of them I should let come up... I read having 2-3 of varying sizes is best to get fruit so I don't know if I should let them all come up and at 24" or so remove a couple!??! I'm pretty new to nanners so lol. Sorry I can't help.

Re: Some Banana Pup Pictures

Mine popped up late last week. The main one is a couple of inches tall but the leaf hasnt unrolled. I guess I need to be more patient lol. I have read about keeping 3 to a corm, i think its helps with fruiting so that you dont inferior fruit. I had a fourth pup but I dont know what happened to it lol. This is my first year of having bananas in the ground. I grew them in containers last year. I had an Orinoco that I planted but it didnt do well so I brought it indoors and it died.

What are your temps like there right now? How often are you watering and have you fertilized or put compost on yet?

Re: Some Banana Pup Pictures

well earlier in the week it was cooler, in the 70s. The temperature into next week will be in the mid to upper 80s. Its been very warm this spring. I just planted the corm last month. I did add some composted cow manure and I used a weak fertilizer. I dont know if I should wait to fertilize with full strength Miracle Grow or if its safe to fertilize it now. I have been keeping the soil moist too

I just added some banana fuel to them today :D So we shall see what happens now!:lurk::lurk::lurk::lurk::lurk::lurk::lurk: yours look good, I see that leaf opened! The corm that my orinocos came from was about 2ftx2ft it was HUGE and the old pseudo was about 8" across!

Re: Some Banana Pup Pictures

I'm going to fertilize mine once it dries up a little outside. I'm so glad the leaf finally opened, hopefully with all of the rain from yesterday it should start growing more. That is a huge corm! Mine had pretty big corm but not that big lol

Double Mahoi with pup. Not sure if pup or twin from the same corm - the larger plant is less
than two feet tall, and then the little one came up.

Williams pups. There is a third smaller one just coming up behind the p-stem.

Dwarf Brazilian. A second pup is on the left, but hidden by those Marigolds.

Saba pup, 3 weeks after severing connection to main plant. I'll give
it one more week before I dig it up. Less stress that way. I had to
remove this one since based on the mature size of this type, it is too
close to the fence.

Hey everyone here is an updated pic of my Orinoco pups. I wanted to know if anyone can suggest when/if I should remove some pups to help the others grow better and bear fruit. There are 4 that are up right now and one nub thats been there a week and not moved. How should I decide which to remove and at what point? Are they big enough now to pull a couple or three?!?!?!

This is the first pup that I have had to grow since I've had this banana. It's either a Super Dwarf Cavendish or a regular Dwarf Canvendish. I'm so excited to see this pup as this is the first banana that I've had to do much growing.

This is a picture of my SDC. I posted this picture in another thread, but I thought it would be good to post it here as well. I was wondering if it would ever have pups again, but after only a week or so outside I have 3 new ones sprouting up. How long should I wait until I seperate them?

What a great thread for us newer aficionados here etc. I thought I had an oddity with 13 pups on one plant. I suppose for as young as it was maybe a little rare, but, after looking at all in this thread here, I see not much is much of an oddity when it comes to our banana.

Can someone please help?
Please take a look at the pic. It seems like the bananas are either growing too fast of lack of a mineral? They are deprived of something and I don't know what..

I fertilize 1 time a week. I water unless it rains. They are growing great just look like they are a little deformed and almost like wind damage but it is not as they come out like that..

They went from just pstems about a month and a half ago (3' or so) and now they are about 10' to 13' depending on plant.

Could they have too many pups?

Any help would be great..

Adam

Re: Some Banana Pup Pictures

Maybe cut back on the fertilizer and see what happens.

What fertilizer are you using and how much do you apply each week ?

NJ Banana 07-01-2011 01:01 PM

Re: Some Banana Pup Pictures

Miracle grow.

I have used the same amount last year and some are doing OK it is just 3 of them that are doing this. Last year with the same amount I took them from Pups to about a 9' pstem and 14' plant.

It seems like another problem and I don't know what it could be..
