I most commonly hear it pronounced as "eye-eye". However, I also know a guy who grew up in Hawaii and he said it is probably more correctly pronounced "ah-ee ah-ee". I have seen it written as A'e- A'e, which would uphold his pronunciation of it. Take your pick, I guess.

There is a link here somewhere where Gabe put up some mp3 files. Ae Ae is pronounced something like (ah-a, ah-a), though there is some odd Hawaiian twist to it). I'd guess Gabe's post is between 6-12 months old, if that helps.
Edit: here is the post I was referring to - correct pronounciation? |

Thanks for the help. Now, when I tell people that I don't have Ae Ae, because I can't afford them, at least I can say it correctly.

Ah-eh Ah-eh is correct for AeAe. and El-eh El-eh is proper for Ele Ele. This is as close as I can get it without accent marks.

Yeah, the accent marks you are referring to are called glottal stops. It literally means you should pause between the letters. So A'e A'e (ahh-ee ahh-ee) is really how is should be pronounced. Just as Kaua'i and Hawai'i should really be pronounced with a pause before that final "i". My favorite is Pu'u o'o steam vent near Mt. Kileaua (don't think I spelled Kileaua right). Or, what's the name of their famous fish? It's about 30 letters long!

Brent, you are correct, except that Aeae does not end with a long ee, it is more shortened and pronounced like 'eh'.

Scot and Brent, it's easier to just listen to the mp3 than try to figure out how to write it phonetically. In addition, the correct spelling isn't really Ae Ae. Gabe explains it in that other thread.

OK, OK...I was trying to clarify the phonetics after listening to the mp3's, but you are correct about the spelling - needed to insert the glottal stops - (damn uvula). Thanks for keeping me on the straight and narrow Harvey, I should have taken no shortcuts in my post. LOL
But seriously folks, how does everyone pronounce Gros Michel - The 'French' way or the American way like Des Moines??? (insert Jeopardy jingle here for 10 seconds) |

Thanks, Scot. I think you are right, it should end with an "eh" sound. I tried to click the Thanks box but there wasn't one under your name. I was wondering the same thing about the Gros Michel.
Seagrapes: Humuhumunukunukuapua'a was the fish I was thinking of! Can you imagine coming up with a name like that? If I caught one of those and someone asked me if I caught anything I'd just have to say "Nope!" |
