Hi everyone, first my banana addiction. They have taken over my house. I was able to overwinter my ensete maurelli. It has to be moved to get out of my sliding doors. I bought two more and four thai blk. Also ensete glauca
overwintered from last year. I have scores of other plants too. Now my new thing is fruiting trees. I have a tangelo growing indoors 'til it's warm enough to go outside. I have had a mission fig growing in a pot for about four years.
I went to Lowes and bought a Chicago fig and a kadota fig tree. I watched a how to video on youtube & the guy said" some people like to collect types of fig trees". Of course I dont need encouraging. Besides I just have to wrap them up just like my bananas and enjoy them year after year. The weather here in NJ isn't exactly suitable for tropicals but if you love them enough they will survive even if it means they take over your house. Anyone else out there doing this?

Lucky for me I dont have enough room for a fig tree hobby (I say lucky because if I didnt have a limit, I would definitely keep buying things!). I have seen nursuries here LOADED with tons of different fig varieties. White Celestene (sorry for the spelling), Black Mission, and Brown Turkey are the most commonly sold ones here, but there are at least 6 or 7 varieties you can get around the area.
I dont protect my figs and I see many people in the area also dont anymore, but they may die back a bit during cold winters and the more tender figs (or the ones that only fruit on old wood) should be protected just in case!
I have a brown turkey and this is my 2nd summer with it! I already have some fruit on it, Im really excited!

I'll count myself in here! I've always referred to it as a passion for plants, but some may rightly see it as an addiction. I'm not too specific in terms of what I plant, other than a tendency toward the collecting of the odd, rare, and exotic. I generally like the challenge of growing plants that are a zone or two tender for my area, just to keep it interesting! I have a Brown Turkey fig as well, and this will also be it's 2nd full summer in the yard. I tasted one fresh locally grown fig and I was hooked. I can't wait to try the fruit off of my own tree, even better if it were this summer! If this is an addiction, then I'm addicted...but it's pretty harmless. Except on the wallet! Happy planting!

The Chicago Cold Hardy fig should work great in your area.

As for addiction to growing herbs, veggies, and fruiting perennials ... welcome to the club!

I always get caught up in the time delay between planting and fruiting. I keep telling myself plant more now because in two years I will look back and wished I had planted another variety or two. I t works that way on all fruit.
LOL Could be worse, at least this stuff is good for you.

Hi Raggedy,

You are in good company. This winter I had 5 Dwarf Cavendish, 1 Dwarf Namwah, 2 Mystery Bananas, 3 tangerine plants, 2 key lime plants, 1 meyer lemon, 6 pineapple plants, 1 clementine orange, 4 coffee plants, 1 cinnamon tree, 1 Bay Laurel, 1 mystery citrus, and 3 avocado plants inside my house. When you add all those plants to my Chihuaua, my cat, and my two rabbits, you've got one heck of a mess.

Outside I have 1 apple tree, 3 peach trees, 2 brown turkey figs, 1 Chicago Hardy fig, 2 mystery blueberries, 2 pomegranates, 8 pawpaw's, 1 pecan, and 1 mulberry. In the garden I presently have corn, carrots, collard, lettuce, strawberries, tomatoes, sunflowers, bell peppers, asparagus, green beans, zucchini, onions, yellow squash, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, watermelon, canteloupe, cucumbers, pie pumpkins, and halloween pumpkins. In my herb garden I have thyme, rosemary, sage, basil, cilantro, and oregano. I think that covers it all. It's like an addiction: I just need to plant something all the time.

Me too!!! I quess I never outgrew playing in dirt. Besides bananas, figs& tangelo, I have several adenium grown from seed now flowering after four years of waiting. Patience is the key. Three ponytail palm, triangle palm &Yucca trees. Too many others to mention. Under lights I have in the basement eggplant, tomatoes of a few different types, cubanell peppers & cucumbers. I have a sudden urge to go next door & get some cuttings from my neighbor's plum tree. I did this for a relative of his once and it worked. He said help myself so I think I will. Harmless addictions are so much fun!

Hey Charles, I feel like they should start an orginization "PA" plants annonymous. But, nobody would join. Least not any of us on this site. I'm
looking for more figs too. There's a lot of video on youtube about rooting etc.

Count me in the same boat. I spent winter with about 20 1,5-2 ft potted naners. Few didn't make it but most held on fine. Just put them outside few days ago. Finally it's warm enough here in N NJ. Now is the waiting game

I'm still buying fruit trees I have no room for. Finally figured how I can fit in the ones I now have by removing pavers to reduce the size of my BBQ patio.

Isn't that the goofiest thing you ever heard? After this --- what --- the garage?

I still will have to plant 2 trees outside the fence leaving them prey to fruit nappers of all kinds. Decided they will be the Fuyu persimmon --- most folks won't know what it is and those that grab some will try to eat them before ripe (yuck) and never come back. The other is the Jaboticaba --- maybe the leaves will hide the fruit on the trunks.

You are getting desperate. You need some dwarf trees and then you could just remove about four square feet of pavers and plant the tree in the opening.
