Hi guys,
My Basjoos are permanently in the ground (in southern UK), so senstitive to the cold over winter - they survived 2 winters with no problems, but it breifly got to -15 celcius here in February, and the entire 8' Pstems froze and rotted, right down to a couple of inches above ground. I cut them right back to remove the rotted parts, but nothing has grown from the previous 2 stems (mother and a pup I left in). I have, however, got 7 pups (so far!) springing their way up - all of these are from suckers that it put out in November last year, and sadly died off in the cold before i even saw them, but they are all coming through now. Do i need to be feeding the suckers at this stage? I would normal feed the nanas every 6 weeks or so over summer, but not sure if food would be too much for the young plants? |

I have plants just like yours.....in the US Fed them hard and heavy.... This is when your plants "bulk up" for the season. In your zone an inexpensive fertilizer will work well for you. ![]() |

Just a follow up - I normally use dried chicken manure pellets for fertiliser (cant use fish blood and bone as the local foxes dig everything trying to find it!) - Will this be too strong for the young suckers, or will they be ok as the corm underground must be strong? Thank in advance

Hi all,
My Basjoo mat has started growing in earnest, but the leaves have started to come up with brown spots all over them, and they are very pale green - is there something that they need that im not supplying? The pstem may have died, but the corm normally doesn't. The pups are growing from the corm. .... Always keep as much of the dead pstem as you can. The pstem has a lot of liquid food/nutrients or fertilizer that will drain back into the corm. .... So new pups are good for a while but will need fertilizer when they start getting bigger.

They are growing well, but the leaves have brown spots all over. I tried to upload some photos but they don't seem to load up.

Your pics may be too large, to load in the gallery they need to be 2MB or smaller. Your plants may sort their selfs out after a couple leafs, give them a little time.

If it is growing well, probably nothing to worry too much about. But maybe someone else with more growing experience will have an opinion. And of course, when you are able to get those pics posted, recommendations may change.
