Musella Craziness

Maybe all of you have experienced this, and I've just not kept up; but I'm observing some crazy stuff with my flowering Musella:

1. Pups are emerging interior to the old leaf bases.
2. There's a basal bloom forming immediately on one of them.

I'm thinking this is all stress induced, but still, pretty weird stuff. After the first light freeze, I noticed it was about to bloom, so I dug it up and put it in the greenhouse.

That is normal for this species. Sometimes many separate non-primary inflorescences will emerge, not just one, so look out for more on the way.

Here are some photos found on the internet showing what we are talking about.

Notice in this one there are at least 3 small ones just starting to form along the pseudostem below the apical one.

Gabe- I noticed the label on the second photo is one of Missouri Botanical Garden's labels. This is probably the one that they used to keep in a container in the Chinese Garden when I was there.

I've seen the musella lasiocarpa in the Chinese garden! WOOT WOOT! Then again, that's not saying much since it's about 20 mins or so from here LOL.

LOL...nice try, but that really doesn't do it justice. Guess I'll give you partial credit, anyway, since you made me giggle a lil. In addition to the lasiocarpa, they have massive mats of Basjoo in there too and a bunch of other cool things to see. And that's just one tiny part of the MO Botanical Gardens! Anyone in this area totally hit up the Botanical Gardens (and hit me up too!)!

Bingo. That's what I'm observing.

Another thing, the flower produces a good bit of super sweet nectar.

So they still have those other bananas labeled as basjoo, huh? That is what we thought it was when I worked there. When dividing it one time I got a pup off of it and ended up bringing it to TX with me. It eventually flowered and set fruit...edible fruit. Just by the color of the flower I knew it wasn't basjoo. Gabe identified it for me as most likely being 'Orinoco' (see my photo gallery). I have contacted some folks I know at MBG about it but I guess they haven't corrected it.

Last time I was there (this fall, I think) it was still labeled 'basjoo' so apparently no, they have not corrected it LOL.
