Looks like my ensete is trying to push multiple leaves out at once? Just put it outside from winter storage under grow lights in the basement. Hope it corrects itself. What do you all think.... ever seen this?

I had the exact same thing happen with the same Ensete Tim, coming straight out of storage like yours. Eventually, actaully pretty quickly it corrects itself. I think it is a combination of low light and growing slowly, but still trying to put out new leaves. When it got outside with the bright light and warmth it quickly grew the way it is suppose to.

Is yours outside now for the summer too? Growing rapidly in our "60 degree" warmth? Hehe.

ha! Yeah really. No I lost it a couple years ago. I brought it out, temps got too "cool" and I put it in the garage and it died. I think temps outside dropped to upper 30s??? So I was surprised it died being in the garage with burlap thrown over it. I had it in a huge pot and was way to lazy to bring it in until our next "heat wave."
I haven't put anything out yet. It looks like some colderish (is that a word?)temps first couple days of May, then much warmer after that of us Tim! So I will wait until after the beginning of May until that first weekend or so. Also waiting for it to dry out and stop raining. You must be soaked there too? |

I've seen that on my bananas a lot right after winter. Its just stress and its not a big deal since it corrects itself when the better weather comes.
I guess you are getting endless rain there too! We have been getting rain pretty much every day here and some days bring as much as 3 inches (we have over 5 inches for the month now). Looks like Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday are the only sunny days in the 10 day forecast and every other day will be cloudy or very rainy (like all day rain). The ground is just mud here. I started planting things in the ground, and it looked like a bog until the heat and sunshine came in today. The rain is going to be the biggest set back for my plants.

Interesting. Well, they needed to get out of my basement, so in the ground they go. Next week should rebound to the 50s at least during the day. If that kills them, then they are weak. Soil temp might be a big factor. Since yours was in a pot, the soil dropped into the 30s. My soil temp is in the mid 50s right now and it'd be hard for it to get that cold again.

My Dbl Mahoi has been doing that since last yr....leaf still unfurling w/ 2 more trying to push up. Prolly needs more sun but it's been too cold to put anything outside. And, did I say rain, rain & more rain? I think I heard we are s'posed to get snow tomorrow

I think they refer to this as "bunchy top". Its just that the oldest leaf hasnt completely unfurled yet and the next newest leaf is trying to get out before the elder has totally unfurled. Sometimes the larger leaf does not continue to unfurl and that next leaf will try to keep growing and do the same thing and then the next newest leaf has the same problem and it dominoes........... When this happens to any of my nanners, I take a very sharp knife and cut into these 'layers' until I meet the newest unfurled leaf inside the Pstem and remove all the outermost material. This frees up that innermost newest leaf and it can then unfurl totally and, problem solved! I do know that there are other discussions about this somewhere on here, but dont know exactly where.

I think varig8 is right. I have the same problem with my Basjoo last year in the beggining of summer - the lower part of the elder leaf has not yet totally unfurled, when the new one hurries to push up . But in my case the plant "fixed" that himself, without my assistance.

No, this is not 'bunchy top'. BT is a virus & is different. Gabe explained that in a diff thread.

Yep, you are probably right, it is not called Bunchy Top, just me getting confused with terminology and similarity of appearance. No matter, the rest of my suggestion on how to relieve your plant from continuing this irritating habit will work immediately.

Cutting away is about the only thing to do - to let new leaf out. It's what I did to 2 plants last yr. Here's the link to a thread about bunchy top
Bunchy top virus?
