here's my raja puri with 3 plants bout same size on one mother corm.. i wanted to see the mat effect. i also wanted to know how the three plants would fruit in order? then i wanted to know the effect it would have on fruit..

Looks great SG! I did the same thing with my apples and Reds when I planted them. I put three plants about 4 feet from each other in a triangle shape on both sides of the garden and let them grow into each other for the quick jungle effect. Now the pups have grown and I have to keep them thinned pretty well or I'll never be able to get back in there again!

I guess when winter comes - such an arrangement can just be fenced in and stuffed full of mulch and covered with plastic to protect the pseudostems? I've pondered what I'll do when I get a bunch of them growing close together...

It'll take about 3 years from crown to pine. Patience is key. If you force it using ethelyne gas before it's time, your resulting pine will be tiny. If you wait and make sure the pineapple is well fed, has plenty of iron and doesn't dip below 70F during the fruiting you'll have nice sweet large pine plus slips. You can get a ratoon crop from it too after harvesting the pine - just let it keep growing. The second pine won't be as big, but will be as sweet.

As to them dying - are they getting enough sun and not too much moisture? They like some moisture but are very drought resistant plants - too much moisture will rot the roots out and kill them quickly - been there several times. And these are full sun loving plants, unlike most bromeliads.

Mulch is whatever I can get my hands on. Here in cattle-country it's usually stale hay. I also collect leaves bagged by landscapers, and collect my own leaves. I don't collect clippings tho - my lawn needs all it can get.

Feeding - molasses, fish emulsion, liquid seaweed, rich compost and lotsa prayer.

mike , they're great green colocasia.
the rajas are in a homemade greenhouse, covered and doesn't drop below 40 in winter. that's what enables me to fruit them in ga and without digging. fhia18 will be dug and stuffed in gh thru winter.. i also have a dwarf orinoco in gh, mother corm been there 4 years now. rajas on 3rd year in gh.

westwood, mulch is free from county as they clean up side of roads..
fert. 10-4-10 and black cow manure.

I have a Raja Puri pup from SG but it has only started growing nicely in the last few months. It's still in a container as I haven't figured out where to put it yet.

SG, I been told from Gabe that the Raja Puris tend to choke. Have you had any problems with that?

no..

i've seen many of them that have, knock on wood not here yet..LOL

what i've experienced is leaf not fully emerging.. so i help it out, start to spread petioles by hand..

but if kept watered and mulched this has since slowed way down.. then the blooms are coming on out..

first bloom i had to cut a "V" in stem to allow the bloom to fall over.

but fruit seems to take way longer to ripen than the d.o.. but i tell you to me the wait is worth it.. i really don't expect to eat these till first of next year.. i'll leave these as long as they need since in gh, no hurry..

the fhia18 fruit will be cut down before first frost.. i beleive they'll have time to plump up and that's all i hoping for.. i've got close to 5 months to go.. fingers crossed and watering every day now..LOL

mitchell, i found something else to help on those pups, put pups in straight mulch to root!.. yupper last summer i stuck 2 pups in mulch in 3 gal grow container and the rooted faster and better, to me.

so how big is that pup now? it's been app. 1 year now..

The pup has about two feet of p-stem now. I had given up on it and left it for dead in the green house, then one day I noticed it was growing back, then it died again, then it came back again! lol Now it's doing fine, I just need a place to grow it! It's in filtered sunlight and growing well in it's container. One of these days......

there's a knack to getting them going..

honestly i have goten to the point of not worring with them and put a little water in there and forget them.. i do better that way.. except that damn pearl.. i've never so far been able to keep those tc alive.. so i'm giving up on them..

give a big ole bald pup and i'll be fine.. LOL

I started with TCs 3 yrs ago bought 50 of them off ebay cheap at 2.99
well all but 3 died that where indoors and i had 1 of them ..

If I had it to do all over again id buy small pups and pay more and only give 1 to everyone. that way im sure they would make it .
I hate those things scared of them NO they make good cat toys LOL tammy
