I heard this morning from Shawn's brother-in-law that he now has five of these with fruit/blooms. Crazy!

I just heard from Shawn that he actually has six fruiting right now. He also said he is able to do better on craigslist selling his pups so he doesn't plan to list any more on eBay. Congrats, Scot.

Okay, my unknown bananas were bought at a good time before they became famous. Shawn got on TV. If you want to see a reporter gag on a green banana, watch here:

Just got the pup yesterday in great shape. Have it in the house resting and waiting for it to recover from shipping shock and put out some leaves. The pup was really thick and healthy with a nice sized chunk of the corm from mom. Good roots already developing. Will give it a week or so to settle before introducing it outside again.

I just thought I would weigh in here. I don't know what variety that is, but it certainly resembles 'Ice Cream'. At any rate, I wanted to address the cold-hardiness of these bananas. Harvey mentioned that the pool may give some extra protection on the cold nights, and that may be true. However, look at all of the concrete and walls surrounding them also!
eBay image: Mystery solved. Talk about an incredible microclimate! Surrounded on two sides by the walls of the house, and lots of concrete around for additional warmth. The pool helps also. He has a beautiful tropical area there. Wish I could grow edible bananas outside like that! |

Frank, I had posted photos before, don't remember if that is the one.
I don't believe that walls and pool fully explain the hardiness. Shawn's place still got to either 18F or 20F in January 2007 (I've heard both temperatures, I'm about 25 miles west and got 20F). Also, he has several of these bananas along his back fence a bit further from the pool and just against a wooden fence and they have done fine also. We had a full week in the low 20s in January 2007. His brother-in-law has also grown them without any protection and had about 20F in January 2007. His haven't produced as large of bunches, though. I'll grow them without any protection this year and will certainly report back. |

Maybe next year! Maybe I'd consider a trade for a standard (tall) Namwah if you could get me a decent-sized pup now.
