Frank, I had posted photos before, don't remember if that is the one.

I don't believe that walls and pool fully explain the hardiness. Shawn's place still got to either 18F or 20F in January 2007 (I've heard both temperatures, I'm about 25 miles west and got 20F). Also, he has several of these bananas along his back fence a bit further from the pool and just against a wooden fence and they have done fine also. We had a full week in the low 20s in January 2007.

His brother-in-law has also grown them without any protection and had about 20F in January 2007. His haven't produced as large of bunches, though.

I'll grow them without any protection this year and will certainly report back.
