Is this something we could do for home garden evaluation? Know of any body who has tried todo this and was successful in receiving germplasm?

I have received germplasm, you have to make a research proposal. They have tightened up on who they will send to. It certainly helps that I work for UF and have done some academic publications. I am going to do a trial on "standard" bananas. I have 11 varieties for that purpose: Grand Naine, Williams, Baloy, Jamaican Lacatan, Baloy, Giant Cavendish, Paggi, FHIA-17, FHIA-2, FHIA-23, and Gros Michel |

Well that's pretty cool. Let me know if you need additional testing sites - for purely academic purposes

They send three plants, I only have two sites for sure. In order to have publishable results I need data from 3 sites over 3 crops cycles. Of course, the stated purpose is to evaluate these plants on muck soils.

NPGS does have access to the web and is aware of the org and players.
On mornings that their request box is full, they probably check what was written on the org. Their goal is to get germplasm out to the farmers/public in an efficient manner, the fact Nick owns a Banana Nursery only elevates his importance. Although supplying t/c labs like Agristarts might be a more efficient manner to cover the US market. Quote:

short cycle dessert bananas and also the FHIAs. My goal is to help other small farms in eastern PR. Banana plants have no real monetary value here ( $0.50 ea.), but the fruit has economic importance. Quote:

Ed, you do such a great job and the org is very lucky for all of your input.
Keep it going. Quote:

I am curious why you chose the Datil, maybe a shorter and quicker cultivar would be easier in your microclimate. Thanks & Good Luck

I am sure I rank real high on their importance list. The interest in "standard" bananas from me comes from some political maneuvering that happened in the state capitol a few years ago. The Department of Agriculture runs the school lunch program and they have been spending money trying to source produce for school lunches locally. After a few conversations with some people, I learned that the school boards would love to have local bananas, if they were available. I did some more research into it and found out that within a 2 hour drive there were over 800K students in public school. There are upwards of 400k bananas served in the schools every day. So there is a ready market for a little over 2600 boxes of bananas daily within 2 hours of my house. The school year is 180 days, so you have a little over $8 million being spent on bananas during the school year. A real solid variety and good growing practices could keep that money local. Once you have a solid production base, you can start marketing to grocery stores as well.

Your accurate descriptions and photographs are an exemplary contribution to understanding the difference between cultivars and one of the reasons why I joined. Everyone here has something important to say, although I may not agree with everything I am thankful. ![]() |

Actually, I wasn't picky about the specific cultivars- my initial goal was to look at differences based on genotype (AA, AAB, AABB, etc) and the datil just filled one of my genotype categories. Of course, I could be completely off base- maybe the variation in cold tolerance, moisture tolerance, etc. may be greater across cultivars than across genotypes, but I had to start somewhere ;-)

Scot seemed to have made some very interesting selections, the Columbian Pelipita, Costa Rican Pelipita, and the short cycle AAB, just to highlight a few. Quote:
