........over a month ago. Mulched heavy with pine straw. It has been a warm Fall here in Atlanta and they've pushed back through the mulch about 2'. We have a 20' cold snap in a couple of days.
Should I cut this new growth back or just leave it for the cold to kill off? |

While the ground is still warm it is common for them to keep pushing leaves. Mine are still full size pushing leaves but I think the dusting of snow might put an end to it....they will keep going if the stem does not freeze. Last edited by cincinnana : 11-28-2020 at 02:09 PM. |

Curious what happens if you don't cut the plants back or mulch at all over the winter. I'm in Atlanta too and not sure what I should do with mine.

Why not wrap the trunk with a frost blanket? They are quite effective.

Wrap it in in the warmest blanket. Toss it into the freezer overnight. |

Btw, if a can of coke is warm enough, and it is insulated properly, it would not freeze for quite while, as the water temp inside the can is insulated from the outside. I do believe though that with the frost cloth, it might be limited to areas where frost only lasts for a few hours. Last edited by AaronTT : 12-12-2020 at 11:15 PM. |

Plant covers work for quick short term protection. I have cloches and hot boxes which I rely on to warm the soil in spring. I do always say...do what you can afford and works for you.! The OP's area is more on the losing side of the gamble.....my guess...but? I am with you on this one....try it. Last edited by cincinnana : 12-14-2020 at 07:38 PM. |
