Banana plant damaged during a move
I moved my banana plant and the top to leaves (the latest to emerge) bent over and are now dying. Seeing that the next new leaf was to come from the previous leaf that emerged (last November) will a new leaf come from the plant or do I need to cut the P-Stem to allow a new leaf to emerge from the P-Stem?
The plant is 10' tall and I want to save it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Craig

In Florida we chop them all the way to the ground and we also deal with freeze damage. Just removing the damage won't hurt it a bit unless it has no corm at all.

Craig,
You need to upload your picture somewhere and post a link in order for it to be seen; none of us here (except perhaps that visiting spam group) have the ability to read your C drive. IMO you don't have to cut anything; new leaves will continue to push up through the P stem and really have no relationship with prior leaves.

Banana plant damaged during a move
I have tried to post pictures with no luck. I am not computer literate and trying to resize photos from my camera that have been downloaded to computer is a grandchild thing and I have to wait to summer for that.
As far as the next new leaf to emerge, the previous leaf that the new leaf comes out from broke off right at the top of the P-Stem. Should I cut this top piece off and hope that a new leaf will emerge? Craig

The petioles bend within a week.. You will get a lot of answers but for me since it is spring (I have five months of season left) and for cosmetic reasons I will cut the bent ones off in a week or so. In fact if any leaves on any plants bend I cut them off for cosmetic reasons. BUT IF IT WERE FALL I WOULD LEAVE THEM ON ...The plant will need them for the winter. Cut the leaves but not the stem or you could let the whole plant sort itself out in a couple of months ....then cut the bent ones off. These plants are resilient . ![]() Bent petioles by Hostafarian, on Flickr If you can handle your plant looking like this for a while do not cut them. ![]() Untitled by Hostafarian, on Flickr Last edited by cincinnana : 03-14-2016 at 09:57 AM. |

What variety of banana is this? You have stated that it is 10' tall, but it appears smaller in the photo. There is no reason to trim the p-stem, as a matter of fact, if its true height is 10' there might be an inflorescence forming inside the p-stem. If you damage that or chop it off like suggested by Botanical_Bryce, no other inflorescences will come up from this particular p-stem. I would not be worried about the bending of the leaves after the winter. New leaves will emerge stronger. |
