Hello. First post. New to this form of communication in general. But I'm having a hard time finding some banana plants I want so here I am.
I'm in NC. The Piedmont area. I have a farm here and I'm looking to experiment with short seasons bananas. I've learned the Orinoco or viente cohol could be a good fit but darned if I can find them anywhere.
Oddly, it's been a life long dream to grow bananas. I finally have the time and space to do so.
And thoughts or words of wisdom are appreciated. Thanks.
Best banana I ever had tiny red ones I bought from a Hispanic market.

Welcome to the Jungle...

Your frost to frost dates are 205 +- on average.
Mine, as well as other expierienced growers in our zone grow mature plants under lights and do not get edible fruit.

Great for tomatoes but not for tropical fruiting plants that take little more time in your zone

SOOOOOO.......you might want to rethink bananas.

Many members grow seasons are just a little shorter than ours and even under lights a plant will not perform as you wish and give you edible fruit.......

Your average temp as well as mine is less than the optimum growing temp for a banana plant that will give you edible fruit in one season in your grow zone.

Orinocos you should be able to find locally. Look around to your neighbors. May be free if you ask. ... Veinte Cohol is still in short supply and difficult/expensive to get.

My Orinoco, dwarf Orinoco, 1000 fingers, and raja puri lost leaves three times this winter due to temps of mid 20 deg F. But, re-grew new leaves within 10 days when night time temps were back above 40 deg F. .... These and the Carolina King banana should do well for you.

Is your hoop a 12 footer or a 8 footer.

With your hoop .....what else do you grow/start in it??

Don't think I've ever been asked so many questions by strangers in such a public setting. Buy me dinner before photos are discussed. I'm interested in the dwarf plants right now. Til I get my feet wet a bit. I have just under 10 acres. I focus entirely on edibles and a small amount of cut flowers. I keep farm animals as well.
I will be caring for banana plants this spring. The dwarf kind. the USDA has great programs for farmers and home gardeners for hoop houses.

Okay, since it seems you plan to stick around, I'll suggest that you edit your profile to show your location and zone. Why? Because when you post questions in other areas of the forum, it makes it easier for members near you to answer questions. Posting pictures makes us all giddy but, since we all do it, we don't consider them worthy of dinner. Sorry.

Of course, I have yet another question. Strong Bird Farm--why? Are you raising ostriches and/or emus? Or peafowl? (Probably not--that would be Loud Bird Farm.) Chickens are pretty tough (well, roos can be) but not normally what one considers strong.

That's because we cant give meaningful advice & answer questions without knowing you situation & environment. and/or what you want to accomplish. Or , learn from you if your conditions fits our situations. ... I would like to know more about the USDA programs for hoop houses. Do you have a link.

Yes. Strong bird farm is the name of my farm. Why? I have chickens, who are pretty smart and strong, no roos. Bird is a slang term for women in the UK.
And when something upsets me I like to give it a strong bird. Middle finger that is...
A hunter that gets too close to my property line... Strong bird.
That one tomato plant that seems a little droopier than others. Strong bird.
We like birds and owls, herons, Cardinals...
Dogs keep them away from the hens.
And when the dog is the cause of that droopy tomato plant in the end of the row, I give him a strong bird.
