Bananas Brindando Hello from a Beginner Gardener

Hi, Everyone,

I'm new to this web site and still learning about this web site. I joined about two weeks ago when I discovered that one member was willing to share his Five Star Texas hibiscus seeds, the white flower ones.

When I first saw the scarlet red Five Star Texas hibiscus flowers in a county library garden, I fell in love with them. After growing from seeds for almost two years, I was very excited to saw my very own first bloom recently, and I'm looking forwards to growing the white flower hibiscus.

Growing flowers is my new hobbie and I'm not very good with it. My biggest problem is the deer; they eat almost everything I'm growing, including the hisbiscus. Other than the deer problem, I tend to either over-water or over-fertilize my plants. But I'm getting better at growing plants.

Joy Re: Hello from a Beginner Gardener

Thank all of you for the warm welcome. It would be great if I can learn from you all about growing flowers and vegetables. Last year I spent four months growing Chinese moop squash, my favorite Chinese vegetable, and got none. This year my first watermelon, about 4 inches long, just rotted away. I'm about to give up growing fruits and vegetables. I live in Georgia. No ones I know grow bananas here. I don't know how you all do it.

You might try and add in calcium to your garden. Also, make sure to water on a consistent basis. This should help with rotting, if you have root rot. Very common on squash (learned that my first year) and other fruit and vegtables. Also get a farmer's almanac. It should tell you when the best time to plant different things are in your area. And when you figure out how to read it, let me know.

Thanks for the tip of adding calcium to my soil; I do believe my yard can use some lime (calcium oxide). I generally surf the web to find information on growing plants, and that is sufficient to help me start. I do own a few plant books; they are just not as helpful.

My major problem is the deer, rabbits, and chipmunks. Without a fence, which won't be approved by Home Owner Association anyway (You wouldn't believe how my HOA is like,) it is not possible to successfully grow flowers and vegetables - I learn that this year as well. They are eating my watermelon, zucchini, tomato, muop (loofah), and jsut about every flower plants I grow.

I'm thinking about switching to a less frustrating hobby next year.
