Do you need them.....that depends on what your trying to achieve. The commercial growers use them to keep the fruit looking pretty for the picky consumers who like to have unblemished fruit. I've never used them and my fruit grow just fine. They do get some dirt, bird poop, spiders, acid rain, and whatever else on them but it doesn't bother me. They still taste great!
