Leafroller presence has been very low in my landscape as well this year. Maybe it'll be a light year for them...one can only hope! I have noticed damage appear like in the illustration above and never see any silk or leaves bound up. I think this damage is done while the leaf is still in the process of pushing out and the caterpillar has no need to "stitch" it closed. By the time the leaf unrolls, the leafroller is already gone and all you see is the little shotholes.
