If a grower wants pups and also wants to fruit the plant, the best choice is to get the pups in the first few weeks and then focus on fruiting.
Vertical Propagation is the least invasive way of accomplishing this, and smaller plants are quicker and easier to work with.
If you're starting with a pup/rhizome, as it roots and starts growing start raising the soil level. First thing you'll notice is new roots will form on the recently buried pseudostem and because the growing point is always above the highest root, the old or starting rhizome can be removed and used for propagation without having a negative impact on the plants growth.
By doing it this you'll be going into your third year with a few thousand pups while waiting for your original plant to flower.
