Anyone in zone 6A? Tips for preparing for winter.
Hi. I’m growing some Musa basjoo banana plants that did fine growing in Portland Oregon with no winter protection and they all were fine.
We moved to Spokane, WA and I again planted some Musa basjoo in my yard. I did have a 3ft area excavated in my front yard and added drain rock, sand and sunshine soil with 400ft of Deicing cable ran throughout the soil bottom to surface. I don’t know if that can help with winter protection but I thought it couldn’t hurt and I am going to try.
To prepare them for winter in zone 6A what is the best approach for winter protection? I see some ppl cut all leaves and cover, some cut the base down (not interested in doing that) and covering with mulch. I also would like to try the winter green wrapping the stem like a mummy. I also do have mulch at the bottom and will run Xmas lights up the trunk. I also wanted to get a pop up greenhouse to throw over that whole area.. would that be overkill? Anyone use the wrap? Could a fleece cover create mold? Any suggestions welcome.
