I'm no expert but I'd have just let it roll. I have been in "don't give a rip" mode this year because of a potential move and didn't cover, mulch, protect or pamper anything. Everything grew back, even stuff left out in pots. Except for the dwarf reds that is, they be gone. Everything else is growing right out of the mushy nastiness like a champ. I'm in Charleston and the end of December got super cold then we got another blast in February (I think) so they saw some cold.
