That's so interesting! Why is the parking lot one so much smaller than the backyard one?
I have twice gotten basjoos to plant at my parents' house, and both times they died when I planted them in ground into a full sun location, even after having hardened them a bit first. I'm hoping this year's one survives after longer period of hardening, but it's still quite small and slow!
