In my opinion, this method is best suited for multiple plants, so i would just say to prepare the planting site well with manure and compost, and heavily mulch to retain moisture. Capturing roof runoff in a rain barrel may be a better option for you. I have my bananas planted in a horseshoe pattern, and all the mulch, manure and plant trimmings go in the middle. No need to dig a pit IMO.
