a lot of the time they do not have reflectors but a couple improvised ones could keep the light focused downwards and not towards a sitting area etc.
I dont spend enough time in the garage to worry about the light, but i do not look directly at it.. it is REALLY bright. I also have a grow tent (4'x4'), that i use it in, which is lined with reflective material, however i use that for smaller stuff like tomatoes and peppers etc.
