Plants are about 6-8". They are in 1 gallon pots, and I had originally put them in pots that were about 4 gallons. My understanding was that smaller pots would actually help with drainage, and I did lose one to rot with the bigger pots (albeit with the miracle gro soil).

When I water it drains off the surface pretty quickly, not sitting on top. And yes when I repotted I replaced it entirely with the new mix.
