Default manual sapling/brush pullers/wrenches

I am clearing some land for tree and garden planting. If saplings are cut off at the base most grow back and the roots are still there. Poison/herbicide is not a good idea to apply where you will be planting. I see lots of venders on the web. Anyone here have experiences with manual sapling pullers.
