There has been an effort to reestablish Hawaiian sovereignty for many years. I am not aware of the current situation but always hoped they would be able to preserve their culture and get a reasonable resolution. The cost of living drives many people off the island and to the mainland. I have not studied the history too much but from what I have learned I believe my US government treated them horribly to put it mildly. I have joked many times with Hawaiian friends that some time in the future if a cheap alternative to jet fuel is not found that the tourist industry would decline to the point where housing prices would plummet. 6-10 days on a boat roundtrip will have a drastic effect. Then I could finally afford to live there if I'm still alive
