Your photo file is probably too big. The size limit quoted on the web site is larger than the size of photo you can actually upload. JPG files should work fine if they're small enough.
Use a photo editing program such as GIMP or PhotoShop to resize your photo. I have a 9 MegaPixel camera. I shrink my photos to 20% and then SAVE_AS to another name so I still have the original, unshrunk photo. If your camera has less than 9MPixels, you may only need to shrink to 30 or 40 percent. If it has more than 9MP, you may have to shrink it more. Try different shrinkage factors--see what works for you.

(You're on your own, here. I don't use Windows anymore, so I haven't tried this installer.)
If you're using Linux instead of Windows (good for you!), GIMP is probably included as part of your distribution, and may already be installed.
