For mulching you should look for something that is organic and decays fast. As it rots it produces heat and helps protect the plant even more.

Hay/ cyperus mulch / pine straw do not work well

Hardwood mulch / chopped up leaves both work very well.


The mulch should be removed early spring if not the plant will sufficate.
