For my Basjoos I had the worst winter in memory here in Dallas and all I used for them was 2 inches of mulch on top of some Burlap and it worked fine.
My concern is more the less hardy varieties I am trying this year. Gran Nain, Ice Cream and maybe Gold Finger.
