Re: minimally edible bananas for 7b
M. velutina will sprout from the ground and produce fruit in a season but they are 98% seed. You basically can just run the seeds around in your mouth and get a banana taste...but that’s about it.

Re: How to winterize this palm
If you have a garage I'd drag it in there and just lay it on its side. It won't grow much over the winter so the shape won't be messed up. I'd probably wrap the trunk just to insulate for those...

Re: obdiahs new toy
Funny...I had thought about trying to make one but it never crossed my mind to BUY one! If I had ever gotten around to building one I bet it would have cost twice as much and worked half as well.

Re: Are Red Tiger bananas red bananas?
I actually ate some Musa sikkimensis fruit once just to try and get the fruit separated from the seeds. I pretty much just mushed it around with my tongue until it was mostly seeds (actually, it was...

Re: Large basjoo for zone 6?
I just saw a Facebook post from a guy in Pittsburgh who has tons of huge basjoo clumps. He cuts them down after the first frost, covers them with mulch and then covers with tarps.

Re: Which Ornamentals Will Come Back in Zone 7
I live in 7b (right on the edge of 7a). I have basjoo, itinerans, sikkimensis, and ornata. I had velutina but it got crowded out by other plants. I had balbisiana for a few years but lost...

Whatever it was, don't worry...
Whatever it was it was skinny so not a water moccasin or copper head. The tail is complete so not a rattle snake. It doesn't look like a coral snake either so whatever it is it should be harmless. ...

I used to drive 35 miles to buy cheap mulch in the neighboring county. It was free for residents of their county but for me it was about $7/ton. Finally I realized that my county road department...

Well...I just read the itinerans thread from that link. I'm no expert so I can only say that I've grown what I've been given as a certain species or variety. I will say that the yunnanesis that I...

Re: musa Itinerans va Itinerans wanted in Georgia
I tried Musa yunannensis but lost it one winter. That doesn't mean that it isn't cold hardy but I did lose it. I've also had a Musa thompsonii that I thought I had lost for a few years (lost in the...

Where in Georgia are you located? I'm up near Chattanooga. I'm not sure which form of itinerans I have (I had three but the way itinerans runs one might have died off and I wouldn't know). I...

Re: Stuttgart Canna
I bought one as a rizome but it came up green...then died. I think they have a tendency to revert to green and the white can burn in the sun but I've seen some nice ones as well.
