Re: The cold hardy list
This list looks like one that Joe Real of Northern California posted to the California Rare Fruit Growers site about ten years ago, but I am not positive it is the exact same list.

Re: The cold hardy list
My California Gold's first full-sized bananas. Previous ones were only about 4 inches long, probably because they bloomed in November rather than May.3677

Re: 9 months minimum?, flower to mature fruit?
I have a related question. I have a banana that died back to just the flag leaf and one other small leaf, but the little guy is putting out flowers and bananas. I heard that you need at least 4 or 5...

Re: The cold hardy list
I am a little south of Joe, whose list is based on his experience near Sacramento in Northern California.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, the list seems to be pretty accurate. I have seen people...

Help! Trunk folded, leaves bent. Any hope?
I was SO excited when my banana plant, about 8 feet tall in a 48-gallon trash can, flowered. It got about 45 bananas on it and was still flowering, but yesterday, the trunk folded over but didn't...

Re: 9 months minimum?, flower to mature fruit?
Hi, Mark. I got into growing bananas about three years ago, so a lot of my stuff is still young. I have personally had California Gold and Dwarf Orin. flower, and I think Kandrian will flower in a...

Re: 9 months minimum?, flower to mature fruit?
Thanks, Tony, that's probably it. We also have cool nights here, even in the summer, so that might also slow it down. And you're right, it seems to get frostbite easily and take a long time to...

Re: 9 months minimum?, flower to mature fruit?
I'm in San Jose, CA. We get a few nights a year in the 20s. I wrote an article for our California Rare Fruit Growers newsletter about Veinte Cohol two years ago, after interviewing one of the...

Re: up the creek with half a paddle
I use 45-gallon and 95-gallon wheeled trashcans, painted with hammer-finished gold and copper paint to look less trashcan-like. In really bad cold freezes, I either pull them inside (which gets to...

Re: California Gold fruiting after TWO years!
The link to the bud picture is posted a few posts back. It now has little nanners on it, but I broke my leg a few days ago and haven't been able to take more pictures yet. And it's still making...

Re: Thousand finger hardiness vs others
Joe, I sat your post about how Monkey Fingers and Thousand Fingers died from cold exposure. I'm confused, though, because I had thought they were in your top four on the Cold Hardy list. Did I...

Re: 25 gallon Nursery pots.
Oh, I see. That sounds like a great idea for first-floor gardening. I will have to remember that one. Right now, I am growing the "mother" plants on a second-floor balcony, and then I plant out...

Re: 25 gallon Nursery pots.
So Abnshrek, how do you make sure that when the bananas start getting big, that the whole plant doesn't tip over? I would think that might be a problem with a smaller container, when the banana...

Re: 25 gallon Nursery pots.
I have been using Rubbermaid and Toter wheeled trash cans. I usually paint them to look better, but the green Toter cans look pretty good without paint. The advantages are that you can get 45-95...

I don't know if I've used the gallery feature properly--give me the attachment feature any day. Here is the link, I think:
