Bananas in Houston
I was ready to give a good account of what has happened in Houston the past few years - pretty much, you can freeze them to the ground, but you can't kill them, but no bananas to eat because...

Winter's effect in Houston
It was a winter test of a new magnitude around here. I haven't added up just how many freezing night we had, but at maybe 20. It was that string of 8 consecutive freezing nights, including a drop...

Re: Houston(ish) Texas Banana Growers
JaNan,
You grow edible bananas in Austin? Now, that is good to hear. Limy and a bit colder than we are here in Houston. I'd love to hear how you deal with winters there, especially this one....

Re: Raja Puri hardiness?
In Houston last winter, we had 8 light freezes, never below 28, but a lot of them. My Raja Puri, which went into winter at 4 feet tall to the crotch and with good girth - probably 7 inches diameter...

Re: The Frost
I guess it depends where you are. But in Houston, no one who has lived through the past 30 years here would argue against an obvious warming trend. If not 'global' warming, definitely 'Houston...

Could you say where those beautifully wrapped plants came from, surely not normal mail. I've never been that lucky.

Re: How tall do suckers need to be?
High there. If you are going to plant your sucker in the ground, not a pot, choose one that is at least a foot long to where it branches - the crotch. But, the bigger the better. I used to be...

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?
I'm not certain what forum I'm in. If it's bamboo, I found that the Heights, a good-size area a couple miles from downtown Houston, is loaded with it - skinny to very tall. I'd always considered...

Houston Native,
Good to hear from you. I've seen your blog - excellent. You mentioned that you are on Channel 39 now and then. On my set, that's the old-movie channel. Give me another...

Margie,
The low 20's, you don't say. I didn't know such temperatures were legal in Florida. You can find a lawyer for any purpose these days, you know.
You may actually have to slash...

Alex,
Sometimes I forget we are in a zone so close to "10", because it is definitely "Zone 9 with hurricanes, multiple freezes, and countless mornings with white on rooves"; no North Texas hail...

Margie,
The double hands I spoke of means that two hands of five are close together and on the same side of the stem, the next two on the other side of the stem - not really an uncommon...

Thanks for the welcomes, people.
I just have to run with this one, richard. I have a plant that went into the ground last year and wasn't frozen back during the winter (about half my plants were). ...

Background, Seriousban
Greetings, all you bananaers. In my 30 years in Houston, I have been in the general fruit tree scene, even some small-scale commercial shots. I've had 45 mostly low-chill peach varieties in my...
