Re: Bananas for sale in San Diego

I'm in University City.

I've found that Mona Lisa is the fastest to flower, followed by Goldfinger. The fruit on Goldfinger seems to mature faster than any other variety I've tried. And both Mona...

Bananas for sale in San Diego

Hi All,
I haven't posted for a LONG time, we moved nearly two years ago and it's been pretty hectic. We have quite a few bananas going at the new house and need to thin them out some. All pups are...

Re: Banana Primer with Pix

Thanks for posting that. I like the "keep it simple" style. It's also nice to see some of the things I've learned myself confirmed by a very experienced grower...scissors for pruning, cutting pups...

Re: Sword suckers...please explain

Thanks for the links. I think part of my confusion at how important people think this is comes from the fact that I'm in a climate where the bananas can overwinter with no problem. Also, I tend to...

Sword suckers...please explain

OK,
I'm sure this has been discussed here before because everyone is talks about them. When Tony (Sunfish) came by my place he told me about sword suckers and it was the first I'd heard anything...

Re: What can kill a large established banana?

Thanks,
Dean, I would tend to lean towards the bamboo as well...which would secondarily cause water issues (probably not enough water due to competition). Hopefully no one else is going to jump in...

Re: Flowering Ensete = Danger

Thanks for the sympathy, but really it was flowering so I knew it's days were numbered. I was actually concerned about it blowing/falling over and was going to cut it down within a few weeks if it...

Re: Flowering Ensete = Danger

It was really amazing that there were no fatalities from this. There were 2 broken leaves on the Pritchardia (fan palm in the foreground) and that was it. If you look close in the "after cleanup"...

Re: Flowering Ensete = Danger

And after a surprisingly short time with a pruning saw. The pile is just part of the leaves, the trunk was piled in sections somewhere...

Flowering Ensete = Danger

This is old news for me, but since I just joined I figured I'd share.

A couple of years ago my Ensete 'maurelli' flowered. It had been in the ground about 3 1/2 years from a small plant and was...

What can kill a large established banana?

I was just out removing a Manzano plant and started thinking maybe it had some sort of disease. It was on the third generation of fruiting stem when the leaves started "backing into the stem". I...

Re: Bent leaves

Tony,
Is that one you got from me? I think the plant that I got as williams (not sure if it really is) does this. But my memory is a bit fuzzy. I've definitely seen this before and it's not a...

Re: Introduction

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Chironex, I'm glad you found the info helpful. I read the wiki section last night and found a lot of my experiences were similar to what was contained in there. It...

Ah, there you are Tony. Glad to hear they're doing well.

I like your avatar. Those are one of my favorite sea creatures, ocean sunfish or mola mola. I was out in a small fishing boat this...

Introduction

Hi Everyone,
I just joined yesterday. A was selling excess pups to a guy named Tony (from San Diego) and he told me about the site. I'm not sure if he posts here though.

I've been growing bananas...
