Re: Anyone dry store any AAA type varieties?

Sorry I forgot to post results in Spring. Been a crazy busy year so far! The plastic wrapped bananas all rotted back to about the leaf level in the cages. They all survived the winter. I started out...

Re: Anyone dry store any AAA type varieties?

I actually think I like wrapping to the cage better after seeing this. I would think as long as you use clear plastic and maybe leave some space at the bottom for them to breath it wouldn't bake them...

Re: Anyone dry store any AAA type varieties?

If you've still got good temps over there I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have most of mine in the garage over winter and let them go dormant until the spring. We've been mostly in high 50's...

Re: Anyone dry store any AAA type varieties?

Sorry it took so long to get back. Had to go out of town for a bit then was a bit under the weather. Here are some of mine I have wrapped up. I do think clear garbage bags would probably work good...

Re: Anyone dry store any AAA type varieties?

I'll take some pics when I'm home this weekend and get them posted. It's a little hard to gauge when the weather is up and down. If we get another big warm spell in earlier spring I might give them...

Re: Anyone dry store any AAA type varieties?

I personally store all mine in the garage in pots over the winter. I've done it the last couple of years and has been successful for the most part. Last year we had a warm spell in early March and I...

Re: Seeds From Blue Java Ice Cream Bananas

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely give that a try. I think the Sand & Gravel yard would be the best bet for my area.

Re: Banana Novice from zone 7a

Welcome! Those are pretty cold hardy varieties. You shouldn't have a problem with those. The biggest thing is preventing too much water during cold months. If you're able bring them in the winter...

Re: Seeds From Blue Java Ice Cream Bananas

The idea of using clear pots is very interesting for watching root growth. I haven't really come across those. I'm curious to see what is available with those. I have mostly used some fabric pots and...

Re: Seeds From Blue Java Ice Cream Bananas

One of the biggest lessons I've learned are watering during our winter months here. My first year I lost quite a few of my plants to over watering during the winter months. I kept them in a lighted...

Re: 2 Questions about trying to fruit dwarf varieties

My dwarf Cavendish that has just fruited is about 6 feet tall from the soil line. I moved it to a 25 gallon pot to lessen the frequency of how often I had to water it and allow me more room for pups....

Re: Seeds From Blue Java Ice Cream Bananas

This thread came in very handy at just the right time. I had a few newer plants struggling and ended up getting some horticultural sand after cleaning them up. So far they have all recovered nicely....

Re: when to remove pup

I am also not an expert but I try to balance time left in season and size of pup. If it's close to end of season I usually leave them until next year so the mother plant has plenty of time to...

Re: Fruiting Potted Dwarf Cavendish

Thanks so much. I wasn't sure if I needed to do some fertilization that was a little heavier on potassium during the fruiting phase. Living in NC I get about 8 months of growing season but have been...

Fruiting Potted Dwarf Cavendish

I have a potted dwarf cavendish fruiting this year. Was looking on what advice I could get as far as fertilization during the fruiting process. First time I've had one of mine fruit.

Re: Soil drainage question

That's encouraging. I did have mine in a partial shade area for a couple of weeks or so to adjust then moved them to a sunnier spot when it looked like they were starting to grow. Good luck hope they...
